I would use a mechanic's stethoscope to listen to the parts you suspect to see which one is generating the noise. If it's inconvenient to get one, you can try putting a pipe or long screwdriver on the part, and carefully putting your ear on that to listen.

The alternator also can make a whining noise, and is the more common source in my somewhat limited experience. The bad water pumps I've experience tended to leak at the shaft or make a "clatter" noise rather than whine, and similarly the power steering pumps have tended to leak a bit at the shaft as they were going bad. But your case may be different.

Listen to localize as suggested above.

And welcome, check your ECTS per many other threads, and perhaps add you year and model to your profile - it helps others when you ask questions because some issues tend to be year/model specific

Thumbs Up Re: whining noise

I too had a whining noise. Was like that for over a year until one day my idler pulley locked up and threw the belt. I replaced the idler pulley and belt. It fixed it completely. Now it is quiet as can be.

Make sure you check the transmission fluid level(automatic). A low level will create a serious whine sound!
