Default Just got a 96 SL2. Have questions.

Well I did it. I bought the 96 Saturn SL2 for 2k. Just need to do the 100k mile tune up.

Thanks to everyone that replied to that thread. It was a big help.

Could you folks help me out on what I should be replacing?

PCV
Plugs (are NGK the best for this motor?)
oil (what weight?)
Trans Gear oil? (what weight and specs?)
plug wires

What else? I dont have a owners manuel. What else needs to be done?

I also have 195 65 15's on it now. They need to be replaced but I dont know if these are stock or not. Tirerack shows a 185 65 15. Im confused.

I have done some searching and continue but its a very slow process.

Thanks,

Rob

PCV - OEM
Plugs - lots of opinions, but for sure, NO platinums
Oil - subject of entire holy wars
Trans - manual, I presume? It actually takes ATF. Mobil 1 ATF will make it smooth, like buttah!
Plug wires - at the very least, stay away from Wells (they're cr@p)

Get an owner's manual via eBay.
If the ECTS (Engine Coolant Temp Sensor) is original, replace it. Search our How-To on "ECTS" for the whole story.
Cleaning your EGR, throttle body and IAC (idle air control, in the TB) is always helpful

Engine oil weight (for Spring weather) -- 10w30
trans oil -- Dexron II ATF (assume this is a manual trans?)
Check your engine mounts
Check the ECTS for leakage
Might want to run some SeaFoam in the oil before changing, for maybe 50-100 miles.

(edit) dang - beat me to it!

195-60-15 will do. The 65s are a bit tall.

Don't forget the air filter. Commonly forgotten and can make a huge difference.

I replaced the following:

-Oil (Mix of 1:1 of Motorcraft 5-20w and Delo 15-40w)
-AC delco oil filter
-STP air filter
-Fuel filter
-Plug wires
-AC Delco Plugs
-PCV
-Tires (BFG touring in 185 65 15)
-Alignment
-Mobil-1 ATF
-ECTS (waiting to be put in)
-Sea Foam treatment through the intake (neighbors were yelling at me, "What did you do to your car??")
-Throttle body cleaned
-Techron treatment in the gas

What am I missing anything?

I start my first 120 mile commute tomorrow. Im hoping for 30+ MPG. Thanks for all the help!

BTW, how many gallons are our gas tanks rated at?

I went on my commute and got 37 mpg on California crap gas!! This is with the cruise set at 71-72 mph. I am very happy!

I calculated the MPG for the tank at 35 MPG exactly. Its mostly highway with a little city driving. Is this the average?

I sure like this car. Its saving me a ton of money. Gas just went up to 3.15 for regular. This car will pay for itself in a shorter time than I thought.

I just got some German Castrol 0w30 for a cleaning phase. The car had 2k miles on the oil, but it was over a year since it was changed. I have a mix of Delo 15w40 and Motorcraft 5w20 right now as a rinse.

You may also want to do a coolant flush. I did one on the 96 sl2 that I bought last fall and the previous owner had been mixing antifreeze and dexcool.

LOL. Thats not good. I noticed after I bought mine that someone had just replaced the radiator as its brand new as well as the green coolant. Good advice though as I planned on it until I inspected it.

Mud, What oil and weight are you running in yours?

I'm running the 5w30 Jiffy Lube special. Yes I know that the consensus is that these aren't always the most reliable places, but they do offer free top offs and I'm burning/losing 1 quarter every 2 gas fill ups. I'll get around to tracking down the bad gaskets and doing the MMO soak this summer, but for now it's the easiest and cheapest way to handle the problem.
