Default Rockauto reliability

So I am able to start catching up on all my maintenance and was wondering if Rockauto.com had worthy parts. I am ordering tensioner/pully and all 4 engine mounts from saturnparts.com, but other than that I am looking at Rockauto for the majority of the other parts.

Select the correct right brands and RA is fine. They sell about every part quality you could want. At a very competitive price as well.

Agreed. It helps to google any unknown brands, model specific if possible, but I tend to stick to stuff like MOOG and KYB. Some brands are better at some items than others. Some brands just rebox items from other manufacturers. Prices are usually 1/2 of what the FLAPS charge, even taking into account shipping.

Just be mindful of where your items ship from. If they ship from multiple warehouses you'll incur a shipping charge for each warehouse and that will eat up some of the savings. Look for the little truck icon next to items, that indicates the item ships from the same warehouse as items already in your cart.

They sell OEM and non OEM parts. Like Oldnuc says, make sure you know what you are ordering. I purchased once from them and had no issues. A non OEM part (lug nut covers) that was not as good, but it works ok.

Just my $0.02 but I used to use RA a LOT.

Lately I've found that it's best as more of a "comparison"/sanity check site.

Most of the FLAPS have pared down their prices for one off replacement parts to comparable prices (especially tf you shop for the oh-so-common 20% off deals).

That said.. when I replaced the head last fall. I got all the gaskets, bolts, seals, etc from RA. Do watch the shipping! I noticed one stupid seal shipped from a remote location. If it was on the main order it added ~$20 UPS delivery. I ordered it separately with USPS delivery option, shipping was $3 and it showed up in 3 days.

Anything with a core charge.. is an automatic skip to the local supplier for me.

RockAuto is reliable and generally quick. Note the above cautions about shipping and specific brands of parts that may impact expected quality. NOt uncommon for the shipping to eat up more than the price and sales tax difference compared to a local source on modest cost items and small orders.

RA's shipping idea is the stupidest I've ever seen for online companies. Quite often turns a $100 part into a $200 part, and then when it doesn't fit you can't get the shipping charge back.

Priced a cat-back pipe through RA, a couple parts stores & eBay. eBay won with a $100 shipped pipe and made it far better priced then RA + $50 s/h. Only problem with eBay for exhaust parts is it all says CPE or "NOT CPE" while listing SC's and SL/SW's in the 100% compatible listing...a '91-'96 CPE exhaust is 3" shorter then a '97+ CPE exhaust...easy to fix but not 100% compatible like they want you to think.

RA and nearly everyone not GM has the same problem, though Amazon is the worst as they come close to not allowing me to buy H4666 bulbs for my SC2 because they don't fit according to the computer...leaving me to wonder how the heck I'm supposed to make 9005/9006's fit.

Buying from RA is a good thing because RA supports this site.

Buying local employs locals. I buy from both.

(just like I shop the local Wally World, Kroger, Meijer, Tom's, Quik-E-Mart and such)

The biggest thing for me is the warranty. If the part breaks and I need to replace it under warranty.... What do I do until the new part comes in? Not to mention the extra shipping.
I prefer advance auto's buy online pickup in store with coupon codes.

The whole idea behind "shopping" is to find the best deal for your situation. The factors involved can include price, shipping, taxes, delivery time, warranty, fit and finish, post-sale customer service, restocking fee risks, and so on. Ultimately do what makes you feel best - which may not match what makes me the happiest.

+1 for shopping around.

I was buying new front bearing/hub assemblies. Went to RA. As SKF is a good name I was pricing those. RA wanted ~$65 for one SKF BR930156K. I googled the part number and found the same new part on eBay for $33 w/ free shipping. But when I replaced the rear assemblies, before that, RA had the best price.
