Default 2002 Saturn Vue

I have a 2002 Saturn Vue. Up until now I have not had a lick of trouble out of it, which is why I am still driving it, I love my Vue.

Yesterday, for no apparent reason, when I parked my car, and took out the keys, opened the door and the door chime went off, I had the keys in my hand. I put the key back into the ignition and it stopped. But every time I took it out, with the door open now the door chime kept going off. If I put the key in or closed the door it would stop.

So, not knowing what else to do, I closed the door, locked it up and went inside. I didn't think about it until this morning when I went to go out. I put my key in and nothing... completely dead. I thought oh geez my battery is dead. My battery is only a year old, and I have a warranty. But I put it on the charger, and let it charge for 8 hours.

Put it in nothing, no lights, no sound no nothing. I am now wondering at this point if it was even my battery, or could there be something wrong with the ignition switch??? Either something in there grounded out, causing a battery drain possibly? Or the switch is just gone and nothing is wrong with the battery?

Are either of these scenarios possible? How do I test to see if it is the ignition switch? If you buy a new ignition switch does it come with new keys?

Any help would be appreciated. 2002 Saturn Vue 6 cyl AWD 3.0 engine

TY

There was a recall for 2002-2004 Vues for the ignition switch but not sure if your problem is related.
