Default Bent Rim

Hello all,
tonight I nailed a good pothole, bent my front passenger rim a little, maybe a 1/2" along a 2" stretch of it. Still holds air and no major vibrations, can I just smack it back with a large hammer? It is my winter set but the tires are real nice. Also, it broke the hubcap and the rear passenger hubcap too, so it was no small pothole.
I plan on inspecting the suspension tomorrow as well as the sub frame, as it was a good hit.
Any input on the wheel and getting it back into shape is appreciated.

Assuming you have steel wheels, yes, you can pound the bend out with a hammer. I had my right front get bent a couple of times hitting potholes, so I'd just take it off, lay it on the ground, then pound it until it looked even with the rest of the wheel.

RIP my 2002 SL1, totaled 9/18/2012... found its replacement (2002 SL) 9/26/12, traded it in 5/10/2018 (199,604 miles).

If steel you can hammer it back into shape, but I've found using anything to protect the finish means I can't smack it hard enough to do any good. Not a problem if you have a heated garage but it's hard to spray paint in less than 50f temps and have it do any good.

Thanks. Yes, I should have specified that they are steelies. I did what you suggested, and it seems fine. No vibration issues either. Just need a hubcap

I smacked them really good, took some paint off. Its my winter set so I am not concerned about rust at this point. Just glad it wasn't my alloys.

I worked in a tire shop as a kid age 15-18. We used to hammer out those kind of dents in steelies all the time. Did you check the inside/other edge of the rim as well?

So you leave the tire on and just pound it?

That's what I did. A 2-lb. drilling hammer or mini-sledge works great.

A couple weeks ago I hit the edge of the old pavement where they were grading for road work. Hit so hard my wipers came on!

I have alloy rims for my snows, but they are indestructible VW alloys from the mid 90's so no problems.

My 96 SL2 and 98 SL1 have joined together to become one. So I guess I now have a 1996/8

I did not! I'll pull it today and check that too.

That can't be possible. A co worker bought a VW Corrado with stock low profile tires (45 series). He broke all four rims in less than a year. NYC potholes. He said they were $1600 for the set.....
