2005 ION-3 Sedan
Default ball joint

i got a set of fe3 control arms today and one of them has a bad ball joint. how do i go about replacing one?

Take it back to where you got it and have them give you a good one.

Aluminium control arms are generally serviced as a unit(ie nothing is replacable).

if this is FE3, this will not be aluminum, but stamped steel. Is it an aftermarket aluminum replacement? never heard of them though.

Fe 5 is aluminum iirc. Some day my ion will have these.

they werent. i bought them used with 30k miles from a performance shop that built a redline. the only reason i picked them up is they had new poly bushings in them

I will never understand why people buy notoriously failure prone or normal wear parts on these cars used. people are buying control arms, swaybar endlinks, swaybars (hell, any suspension part), ignition coil packs, icms, steering columns, ect... all used. big ticket things like engines (when you buy one with proper applicability), and transmissions, I can understand, but not something as cheap and failure prone as the rest. there is no such thing as a low use ion anymore, so any suspension part is going to have rust or be about to fail (guess how long I expect my swaybar bushings to last? I don't, guess how long I expect my control arm bushings to last, even though they are still new? I don't). sorry, man, but you made a dumb move, buy new FE5 arms with poly bushings in them and call it done.
