I bought my 2 door hatchback Astra XR new off the floor in 2009 for something like $15,000 (man were those salespeople glad to see it go). It's now at 140,000 miles, and i'm planning to drive it into the ground.

I may not be the last Astra owner, but my mechanic skills are growing along with the car, so I'm hoping to break 200k.

I'm sure the end for me will come when parts become too impossible to find, although I've been having really good luck with a place in Europe with a decent website and $35 shipping to the US. I'd say where it is but I don't want to be accused of trying to sell anything with my first post. Ask me if interested.

I'd love to hear what everyone's criteria would be for when to let their Astra go.
I am new as well just bought a 2008 Astra XR with 166KM really just for a fun project car no idea what the color name is kind of a metallic beige?

Interior is in good shape but the exterior is in bad need of detailing which I have an appt tomorrow.

The passenger side rear tail light is cracked still works but looks bad because of the moisture/condensation inside the assembly...I managed to find one off ebay in Kentucky of all places but shipping North of the border ain't cheap so would be interested in alternate parts sources.

Don't ask why I remember such minutia, but I believe that color was called "sandstone". Nice color and not all that common.

Congrats on the purchase!

My yearly bump to this thread. I've got 81,000kms on the odo. Lots of scratches from my kids...doh. My Astra has been a bit crippled lately, in the winter, I lost control on ice, and hit a curb, burst my old winter tire on the one that hit. Replaced the tires, and then realized I must have also bent the control arm. I bought a replacement but haven't gotten around to replacing it yet. I watched some videos, does anyone have any hints for replacing the control arm? I'm just an amateur DIY, but I think I can do it, but I just ant to know of any caveats.

Kikastra,

This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but I seem to remember it will probably show you most of what you want.

These videos show a guy with his own shop in the UK doing work on an Astra before "selling it on," a little Mike Brewer lingo there. This guy obviously has a conscious and wants to sell a safe and reliable product. His channel has him going through this car and completing repairs of all faults. If I saw these videos, it would make me want to buy this previously rusted and busted Astra H.

He goes into getting the subframe off, then the steering rack, then everything else. The biggest differences I remember are that we have the "electric" rack and the steering here is powered by a double sized pulley off the water pump......I guess I should look at the video again before saying that, but that is my memory, along with two different vendors of steering racks being used interchangeably on this type of Astra.

Have a coffee and enjoy, they are a bit long, but satisfying to watch. The others, too.

Holy Schamoly.

You said control arms, I thought tie rods and other components. Chemo meds throwing me off, and my wife won't let me have coffee to help wake me up, convinced it hastens cancer growth. My oncologist calls BS, thank God. I will enjoy some surreptitiously after she leaves the house. In the mean time, the correct video is below.

I followed this when replacing mine. Harbor Freight sells a decent pickle fork for less than $15. That and a three pound hammer will make short work of releasing the old part. The pieces I put in had polyurethane bushings and were a real tough fit, I was hesitant to use the force necessary to bust them into place. My Samoan friend helping told me to take a break and get us a couple beers, come back in 15. After several minutes of unnatural noises and banging, I returned and he had the both of them in place. I don't think an arm with natural rubber bushings will behave the same.

That is an awesome series! Newly posted and similar to US spec Astras. Everyone should watch these.

Hi Nicolas_p,

Thank you. I'll do my best. Told my wife I'd be getting rid of my 3dr, but with all the parts you gave me, I might re-think that.
