Default What shocks to buy for sprint extreme springs?

Hey guys Need some advice
I got a 1997 sl1 that I got some cheap sprint extreme springs for. I got 260 km on the shocks and they obviously need replacing before I put those springs on. So what shocks do I get ? I can really only find these kyb gr2 out there. I have read on here that they might not be very good for such en extreme lowering. Please help. I have the springs and dont want em to just rott in the box. Thanks guys.

yup, you'll prolly be stuck with the kyb struts. they work, but not very well. definitely better than the stockers. good luck!

The best option that we have without getting some custom made are the KYB's.

From what I have been reading kyb gr2 will wear out really fast with that extreme drop and basically give me a crappy ride all in all. I have the springs so I got use em lol. So I have been looking around the net and came across these

w w w.streetbeatcustoms.com/Matrix/Shocks/Coilover-Shock-Kit-_-8023/566274/
A coilover shock kit? Never heard of it before. As I understand they mount on top of my shocks which will probably by those kyb gr2 at this point and will be adjustable so that the drop isn't as much and then hence i wont wear out the kyb gr2. Do I understand that correct? Please help I am new to this whole car fixing and modifying. Thanks alot guys.

you can get KYB GR-2 struts or send your OE Saturn struts to TrueChoice in Ohio and they will cut them open and put a Koni insert inside. Then you can adjust them. www.truechoicekoniracingservices.com is a link to them. I've used KYB GR-2 struts with H&R Sport and Eibach Pro-Kit spring and nothing bad happened in 100,000 miles of use. However I like the idea of being able to adjust the Koni-in-a-Saturn strut housing

They look like the junk that you find on E-bay only off of a different website. Ya either gotta go with what you have or sell the springs and get something different. Also, if you want coilovers, you ARE going to need to spend a lot of money:

Agility Coilovers $1400
AMR Engineering $1300

I don't know how close the AMR price is but you get my point, otherwise, your "coilover" suspension will be junk.

I like the idea of koni shocks in my saturn. Any idea how expensive that would be? Has anyone do that? Also what exactly is a coilover kit? What do they do? Sounds like these lowering springs were a waste. Are they at least well built, so I spend the money on the custom koni's I wont be disappointed in the springs? Thanks for all the help guys. Coil overs are fully adjustable. They have a nut that slides the spring cap down or up, allowing you to make the suspension loose or tighter, depending on what you wish to do. Where as a strut isn't adjustable. Unless you are road racing they don't serve a purpose for the cost.

now I am no suspension guru, but can these cars take the shock inserts because they make them in different heights.

KYB's + Sprint Extremes = (unless you never, ever have anything in the trunk or a person in the back seat). KYB's are no better than stockers or stock replacements for the rear.

Spring Tech (ST) struts + Sprint Extremes = (Only problem is that they can be hard to find)

werent the ST's stiffer in the back and the KYB's stiffer up front? (thought i read 30% somewhere) Would that not make the ideal set up KYB in the fron and some ST's in the back?

it will cost $375 each ($1500 total) for TrueChoice to cut open and put Koni adjustable inserts in your Saturn struts. the Koni inserts themselves are $200 each if you need to replace them in the future. TrueChoice can make your OE struts into coilovers for additional money. I'm not sure what that cost but when SPS was selling a Koni coilover kit they charged $2399 -- including springs

Ok I got the sprint springs and sprint tech struts for the back, kyb gr2 for the front. Anything else I need to go a suspension work over? There are all kinds of things I see online for shocks struts, such as mounts, bellows, etc. What if any of those things do I need? Or will my new shocks have all that. My friend and I will be installing them, just wondering if there are any other parts I should be ordering for a complete suspension/strut overhaul. Thanks alot guys.

I would replace all of your strut mounts. I replaced all of mine with KYB mounts and no issues but some of the guys around here will say that they are junk mounts. Anything else is really by preference.

Well I got the sprint springs in, running on spring tech shocks on front and back. Waiting for money for kyb gr2's upfront. Also will be replacing the mounts with kyb mounts. Right now its a cool new low ride. Very bumpy. But I corner in my saturn like never before. Thanks for all the imput gentlemen. I will be posting back with updates.
