Default 07 Aura ABS/Traction control lights

ABS issues. I just replaced the main wheel bearing and now the ABS Traction control lights come on at about more than 10 MPH. Does the computer need to be reset or did I just get a bad part?

Error codes, abs light, traction control,, etc., won't reset if an actual problem exists. If a problem turns on an indicator, you have several options - fix the problem and allow the automated self diagnostics detect a correct repair to reset the indicator and error code, manually reset the computer using either a reader with push button reset or battery negative cable disconnect without fixing anything and see if the error or indicator comes back, ignore the indicator or have GM determine the fault. Under normal circumstances, the abs and tc lights turn on at ignition on time to indicate self tests are performed during power up routines, indicator turns off and then the zinging sound as the car accelerates above 5mph as the abs electronics exercises the abs motor to complete self tests. This occurs every time we startup and drive (vehicles with abs). If the abs/tc light turns on and stays on, abs is indicating a fault and automatically disables itself from interfering with basic braking. ABS light ON = fault detected and abs/tc is no longer operational until repairs are made.

The exterior parts that are exposed to wear and tear, wheel speed sensors, reluctors and wiring to each wheel speed sensor are the most likely areas to suffer issues. Its rare for the abs module and electronics to fail.

Re-examine the wheel bearing repairs, paying attention to the wheel speed sensor, its mounting and distance (gap) from the reluctor (steel toothed ring), reluctor damage, and wiring to the sensor. Autozone may have their newish reader decode abs error codes.

Yeah I did the repair myself and think maybe the part was defective. I guess the wiring which hasn't been moved in years was moved around and might have caused a short or finished a break somewhere. I will take it to Autozone where I purchased the Wheel Bearing and see if they have a code reader. The one I have does not read anything about ABS even when the light is on.

I too have a reader but it's several years old and cannot read abs codes as most first, second and maybe third generation readers didn't have abs decoding capability. GM always had the capability since their scantools cover the entire family of vehicles and must decide every code from each module (ECM, BCM, PCM, abs, TCM, OnStar, radio, etc.. As consumer demands rise, higher priced readers can decode abs errors. Some members mentioned AutoZone upgraded their readers to read abs errors last year.......

I was give one of these:
https://launchtechusa.com/easydiag2plus/
It does generic code reading and it currently comes with 2 car lines you can download.
The version I was given had no car software with it so I had to buy and download it. I installed GM and it gives access to all GM made vehicles and it updates often. It accesses every module in the car, reads and clears codes as well as displaying and graphing live data. I was having the ABS, Service traction and electronic stability control intermittently. I was able to read the ABS module codes and narrowed it down to the Left Front wheel speed sensor being erratic. I graphed all 4 wheel speed sensors and could see the problem when it appeared. After a couple of erratic signals and the ABS light, traction and stability would come on steady. It often reset itself the next time the car was started. The bearing feels good and the wiring is intact. As the weather is warming up the problem seems to be going away. Another code I get randomly is for the steering wheel position. When that happens it turns the ECS Off but ABS and traction control stays on.
Anyway long story short, this bluetooth dongle is a great option for a full function code reader that you can put on a phone or tablet. You can also save and share reports.

if the traction control light comes on and off all the time what does this mean? I get service traction about 10 or 15 times per drive. The ABS light never comes on though. Does this mean the wheel speed sensors are fine and its something else?

When traction control light comes on, transmission shifting becomes terrible, I would have to think this could hurt the transmission in the long run?

I had a bad wheel speed sensor on a front wheel. Before it failed completely I had weird intermittent problems with traction control but shifts were fine.
It would help you narrow it down if you could read codes while it is happening.

My obd2 does not show any codes for traction control. I dont have an Autel or a GM tech 2 either.

right when traction control light comes on, shifts become hard. I read other people had the same issue with the malibu, i'm guessing its a design decision.

To see ABS sensor codes you certainly need a capable code reader.
The one I have on my phone has been discontinued but is still receiving updates.
The closest I've seen is to the EZdiag scanner is the Bluedriver.com. I haven't used it so I can't say how extensive its functionality is or how much live data can be read. It would likely show the code that causes the traction control issue if you scan while the error is there. Here is a review of it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4-lcpJhwYI
When the abs sensor would go flaky on mine brakes would activate randomly while driving and the whole car would shudder but sitting still there were no codes. I suppose if that happened during shifting it would mess things up. The brake application could feel like the transmission is shifting as well. I was able to graph all 4 wheels speeds and while driving the left front speed would suddenly jump while driving on dry pavement, the ABS module thinks traction is lost so it pulses the brake on the opposite side. Then it would throw a couple of ABS codes but those codes would clear themselves by the time I stopped.
It could be caused by a faulty sensor which means change the whole wheel bearing or there could be a faulty wiring connection between the sensor and the ABS module.

at Autozone they had a bit better code scanner and it threw a c0561 , i hope if i get a more capable one, it won't just throw that.

Maybe i'll just get a GM tech2 clone on ebay, that would be the ultimate.

I am not getting an ABS light, just the traction control one. I was reading that when traction control is turned off on aura's and malibu's of the same configuration the transmission pump runs 100 percent. The difference is crazy, I can drive rough for 10 mins, smooth as ever, then get that light to come on, and just putting the car into park makes the whole car shake. Then wait for a second, let the light go off , shift again and drive and its smooth.

I hope my traction control unit isn't bad (assuming I can get more than that single code). I think the guy said they replaced a wheel bearing, Maybe the sensor in it is bad or just not hooked up properly.

I also found a coolant leak, and since I am getting a p0171 and p0174 hopefully not but probably an intake manifold leak. Maybe just the crossovers.

I would like to get all the other stuff worked out before I tackle that though.

Why isn't the ABS light coming on? Why would just the traction control light come on?

You would think a bad wheel speed sensor would disable ABS as well.
Did you get the last two digits of the C0561 code?
I found these service bulletins:
"Recent part investigations have shown faulty traction control switches to be the leading cause of C0561-71"
https://f01.justanswer.com/73bbchevy...1_bulletin.pdf
This one doesn't really make sense but lines up with your other codes:
http://c0561-saturn.autotroublecode.com/
This one is wiring related:
https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...59101-6201.pdf
There is no Traction control module per se. Data from multiple modules carry out the Traction control function in the Electronic Brake Control Module. C0561 indicates that there are no problems in the EBCM. Codes from other modules need to be checked. Such as BCM, ECM, IPC and TCM.
It's entirely possible that the P0171 and P0174 are the cause but since the transmission seems to have issues, the Transmission Control Module should be scanned for codes as well.

How would 171 and 174 be linked to the traction control system?

I am losing coolant, not a ton, but a bit is leaving the system. It could be another leak entirely and there are no signs of head gasket failure. I was thinking it was just being lost in one of the broken gaskets around the manifolds.

This is hard to diagnose without a good scanner, aka dealership ones.

One of the links said:
"C0561 Saturn OBD2 may also be triggered by faults earlier down the line. For example, a dirty MAF sensor might be causing the car to overcompensate in its fuel-trim adjustments. As a result, oxygen sensors are likely to report fuel mixture problems." Like I said before, it doesn't make sense but there it is.

C0561 is a message that the EBCM has disabled the traction control because of a code in another module and is indicative the the problem is not in the EBCM, so the possibilities left are the ECM has disabled it because of the 2 codes you have or there is a code in the Transmission control module that you don't know about yet.

Same idea as, if you have remote start, a code that turns on the check engine light will disable it even if it's totally unrelated.

Take your two codes, part of the Traction control reduces engine power, with the 2 system too lean codes, perhaps the TCS can't properly reduce engine power because the mixture is already too lean so the Traction control gets turned off.
lol, I found this link after I wrote that, backs the theory up:
https://www.saturnoutlookforum.net/8...ntrol-off.html
GM works in mysterious ways.
If it was my car, I'd be getting rid of the codes I know about then move on.
Did you clean the MAF sensor yet?
