Default 2001 SC2 with P0446

Trying to chase down the cause of a P0446 on my son's 2001 SC2 with 126,000 miles on it. Replaced the gas cap, vapor cannister purge valve and the vapor cannister vent valve. Didn't solve the problem.

Did some diagnostics yesterday and came up with the following.

With the key on, engine off, theres 12 volts at the connector for the vent valve, but plugging in the valve doesn't cause the solenoid to close. Removing the valve and giving it 12 volts on the workbench activates the solenoid.

When I blow into the pipe that goes from the vent valve to the charcoal cannister, I can get half a breath in before I can't blow any more air into it. The air rushes back about as soon as I stop blowing into the pipe.

Voltage for the tank pressure switch is 4.85 volts all the time. No matter if the engine is on, off or if the gas cap is on or off.

I'm thinking the problems is with the pressure sensor.

Any thoughts? Heck, I'd be happy if I could somehow fool the PCM into thinking the pressure is correct just so it will pass the emissions test.

One member did find his fuel pressure sensor as the fault.

With the key on engine off, the voltage on the scanner should have been around 1.72 volts. Mine was at 4.94. I dropped the tank and unplugged the sensor and the voltage dropped to o. Installed the new one and the voltage was at 1.72. Put every thing back together, drove the car down the high way and watched the voltage. It stayed around 1.86 then all the sudden it jumped to 4.95 for about 4 seconds and dropped to 1.72. No service engine light, every thing works like it is supposed to.

Pressure sensor should read 1.5 volts with the key on and the cap off. When you plug the vent solenoid back in Low Saturn it does not close because the PCM has to ground the control side to close it. It would beneficial to have a scan tool that you could command the solenoid to close just to verify if the ground side wire and driver in the PCM is good but you are on to something with the fuel pressure sensor.

Got the sensor replaced last week. It was pretty easy. After some careful measuring, we cut a square opening in the floor of the trunk to access it.

Reset the SES light and have been driving it since last Tuesday to get the monitors to complete. All that's left is the Secondary Air Injection and EVAP monitors. Funny thing is that the last several times I reset the PCM, while it was still having issues with the tank pressure sensor, the readiness monitors completed rather quickly. Now that I want to complete so I can get an emissions test, its taking forever.

But at least there's no SES light.

The warmer it is, the longer the air takes to check off. In the summer in Central CA, I often had to get up and cold start at 5am to get that monitor to pass.

If it's been pretty warm up there, try a buttcrack of dawn "cold" start.
