1996 SC2
Default 96 SC2 headlights pop up, hi beams work, lo beams don't

Interesting problem: When I turn the headlight switch in my '96 SC2 to on, both of the pop-up doors open as expected. While they are opening, both of the headlights flash on momentarily but, when the door is completely open, both of the lights are completely off. If I turn the high-beams on, both of the headlights go on -- I can't really tell for sure but I think they are on bright. If I then hit the high-beam switch again, both of the lights go off completely (not just back to low-beam). The tail lights, parking lights, brake lights, and turn signals all seem to work normally. Anybody have any idea what's up? My first thought was that a fuse must be blown but I think I can rule that out because the same lamps that aren't working are the ones that work when I turn the high-beams on. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Is the high beam indicator lamp lit?
I would think it would have to be something in the headlight switch. Pretty common in a bone yard. Any 93 to 2000 SC or 95 to 2002 SL will be the same.
Good hunting.

It's weird that it would happen to both. There are two common possibilties. The low-beam element is bunt out, and you need to replace the bulb, or a wire on the harness has broken. But like I said, for it to affect both at the same time, is strange. So it could be something else. I had the broken wire on my '92 2 weeks ago on the left light, but I thought it was the bulb so I replaced it. And what a PITA it is to get at those lower 2 screws for the bulb, and then to get them back in with out dropping them, and then realizing it's the friggin wire after getting it all back together, just as it starts lightly raining. So I sold it! That oughtta lean it.

Peppermrj, yes, the blue high-beam indicator light on the dash does come on when I turn on the high-beams. Also, all of the dash lights go on as usual when I turn on the headlight switch.

Uzzy, yes, it would be very odd for the lo-beam elements in both lamps to go on the same day - especially since one of the lamps is the original '96 equipment and the other one was replaced by me with an aftermarket part 2-3 years ago!

i had the left headlight of my '95 SC2 go out also . high beams work. took it apart and found my headlamp connector wires had gone brittle and one of them broke off.

so i'm off to the boneyard this weekend to pick up some spare connectors and housing screws!!

Does Saturns have relays for the low/high beam? I remember on a car I had a few years ago that a relay burned out on the low beam but the high beam would work...

replaced the relay and the low beams worked normally...

Dunno just a thought...
