Default Leather Shift Knob

I've been shifting the gears for over 100,000 miles now with my original hard-plastic shift knob. I was thinking about upgrading to a more confortable knob: a leather knob.

I recently tried the black short leather manual shifter knob from Summit Racing, part number BMM-80744. I found that the stitching is raised, very rough, and uncomfortable. It almost feels like a metal zipper.

Is the Saturn leather shift knob comfortable? Does it have stitching like a metal zipper?

the Saturn (manual) leather knob is excellent. feels great and it's slightly bigger than the plastic shift knob so it fits better in your hand. you don't even feel the stitching. when i got the leather shift knob, i also got the leather parking brake cover to match. the steering wheel (on an sc/sc2) is already leather covered.

Roger and Eric--

Thanks for your responses. I'm sold on the Saturn leather gear shift knob for sure now. I packed up that leather shift knob from Summit and its going back tomorrow. My plastic knob is back on again for the time being.

I already received a quote from Joey for a used Saturn leather shift knob. He is very responsive. I can see what SPS sells them for brand new. I asked for a quote from IronToad on a new one, I'll see what they say.

The emergency brake cover - I didn't think of that! It didn't even occur to me that it slides on and off. As far as the steering wheel, I knew about the leather on it but I figured that due to the air bag it would be expensive and a pain in the neck to swap steering wheels.

Once I went to a local junk yard (I mean, an auto parts recycling center). I found most of the wrecks had their air bags deployed, most had their trunks open and filled with water, and most had lots of dust and dirt in the insides. What was sad was seeing how people abandoned a part of their lives - the cars had personal things in them still such as address books, umbrellas, newspapers, paper towels, boxes of tissues, pencils, and so on. I guess in some cases the owners of these wrecks didn't make it either. Scary. I'll have to think about the steering wheel and the e-brake; thanks for the ideas!

Just a quick update:

I had no problems returning the first leather shift knob back to Summit Racing. Sure, I had to pay the return postage, but it was only a few dollars. They posted a credit to my credit card. Everything worked out well.

I bought a leather gear shift knob for my manual transmission. It is exactly as Roger and Eric described. I am very, very happy with it. Larger, a bit softer, and no odd sensations from the stitching. Also, the leather knob feels warmer than the plastic knob did in the wintertime. It is really great.

Installing it was a piece of cake too. Just pull up real hard on the original knob. I did this from the back seat with the trans in second gear - while parked of course.

Sure enough, my wife is not 100 percent happy with it! She claims that it is too big for her small hand. I suppose she will complain a bit more when the credit card bill comes in. Not to worry; she only drives our Saturn about 10 miles a week versus the 450 miles I drive each week.

Just my $0.02 but, I've found a nice pair of leather driving gloves to be a less expensive alternative to replacing the steering wheel, shift knob, and parking brake lever with leather finished ones. Plus, I can use them in more than one car!! <img src="http://64.77.2.166/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/Images/Happy.gif" border="0" align="middle">
