2008 Astra XE
1997 SW2
Default PO 420 Code

97 SW2 now with 311,000 miles. I got the PO420 code again today for the 2nd time, last time about 4k miles ago. I cleared it and as I explore the many potential causes I am not sure where to start. ETCS changed,,,,,200k ago as well as front O2 sensor. I may just toss some parts at it see how it goes. Thoughts are welcome and thanks in advance!!!

You can try searching past threads here dealing with this error code while getting some background info here and from googling P0420. Be aware to use only sources that deal with a straight interpretation of the code and associated issues to address. In general, high mileage suggests a worn out catcon and/or downstream O2 sensor.

Default Re: PO 420 Code

I am getting that P0420 code once in a while. It usually comes on after I make an accelerating left turn. I think it might have to do with my exhaust pipes cracking open while making the turn. I use my OBD reader to delete the code every time. Since it doesn't affect my gas consumption, I am leaving it alone. I know my exhaust pipes need to be changed soon, so until then.

bad cat or bad post-cat o2 sensor

I'd start with the sensor if the cat isn't rattling

a pre-cat exhaust leak wouldn't introduce more oxygen to the system to set the p0420 code as exhaust gasses are only escaping and no additional oxygen is entering the system
