Default Upgrading Sound System

Hah, so my 99 SL1 came with a really ghetto JVC Cassette Deck.... and I believe everything else is the same... The endings appear to be component...

Anyone have any cheap ideas for quality as far as "upgrading" my sound system?

Money is tight, but I have a little room to bend.

Or is it best to keep the ghetto cassette deck (HAH).

Should I keep the stock speakers and just upgrade the indash player?
Or should I upgrade everything while I'm at it?

How much can you spend? You'll need:

a Metra kit (99-3105) $12.48
wiring adaptor (70-1858) $5.50
and an antenna adaptor (40-GM10). $3.65

(prices are eBay, when I bought my stuff - put in the part number in ebay search). That's about $22 there. Add in a used $40 player, or get the Dual mechless one (XR4110?) for $40 new (no CD player, has SD, USB and I think 3.5 inputs, but has no clock) and you are in business for around $62 or so.

Unless you have a bunch of cassettes you are fond of

I'd suggest saving up a few bucks and piecing something like this together :

$130 Sony Xplod CDX-GT740UI (front USB for iPod/flash drive)
$65 Alpine SPS-600 (one pair, buy another pair later)
$10 8GB PNY Micro Sleek USB flash drive (protrudes only 1/2" from USB port)

+ the usual mounting kits etc.

This setup, with the earlier Sony Xplod CDX-GT620U and these same speakers has served me well for 3 years. I recently picked up a 4GB PNY Sleek flash drive - the previous Sandisk one stuck out way too far and I bent the USB connector.

If you're willing to do the install yourself - I think you may end up kicking yourself later if you skimp too much on componentry now.

Best,

So I believe my connections are NOT Coaxial... how much of a pain would it be to convert it?

I was looking at:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=A5W45QDYAHWB2

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Now the detachable face tape deck I don't think it came with the car... so as far as the other connections go... could they possibly already be there?

Or is the Component just better? Would that Naxa work with everything though?
I like the price and the features and I have the free 2 day shipping on it.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking... when you said tape deck, for some reason I thought it was OEM. If you have an aftermarket tape deck in there, you should already have an antenna adapter and mounting kit. You probably have the wiring adapter, but some people just cut off the old (OEM) end from the car and directly attach their new stereo.

Best bet is to pull it and see what you have in there. If the previous owner did it right, you will have a wiring adapter in there.

Yeah I'm not entirely sure if its stock...

I mean, it's a detachable faceplate JVC Cassette... It most certainly seems aftermarket but I could be entirely wrong.

In addition to the dash kit and wiring harness mentioned above (if you don't already have them), I picked up a Sony MEX-BT2800 and four Pioneer 6.5" speakers on eBay. Best of all, the Sony only cost me $88 delivered, and all four Pioneer speakers only cost me $22 delivered! Best thing about the Sony is it has both Bluetooth phone and Bluetooth music streaming. With the right phone, you can answer and make calls through the Sony, and stream music from the phone with no wires. I use Google Music to store over 9000 songs in the cloud and can then access all of it through my phone.

Hard to believe you can do better for $110 for radio and speakers. Obviously, I used factory speaker wires, and I doubt with this level of equipment thicker wire will make a lick of difference unless you go to extreme lengths to add soundproofing.

I installed everything myself without too much trouble. The only tip I have is to ground the stereo to the frame. Don't just connect it to the black wire on the harness. I did it that way at first and got all kinds of static when listening to the radio.

It's JVC so it is not stock, all the stock units said "Saturn" on them. On the plus side, sounds like they did a good job on installation if it looks stock

this is where i get all my car audio stuff from. you can even put in your car year and model, and they'll show you everything that fits your car.

you can buy off of this site, or you can go to best buy and spend 50% more.

Again, not creating a new thread but bringing up similar ones to what I'm looking for, so is that Metra kit the only adapter needed to adapt a "standard" stereo into a 95 Saturn SL1 dash?
