Default Engine/Trans Swap Guide?

Does anyone have a 'definitive' engine and transmission swap guide for the S series? My son has a '96 SL1 with 190000 miles, a very good body and clean interior, and it's using a quart of oil every 200+/- miles - lots of blow-by and no leaks. The automatic trans is OK, but does have the reverse slam, and occasional up-shift delay. I see a lot of wrecked S series on craigslist with (supposedly) good engines/transmissions, but I have no idea what would be a "bolt-in" swap. I'd like to stay away from swaps that would require customized wiring. What years and models would just 'bolt in'?

You can try this site ( http://www.saturnwiki.net/index.php/...haust_manifold ) I did an engine swap in my 96 SL1 and I got a good engine from ebay $ 150.00 plus $ 75.00 shipping you can use up to 2002 engine you need to keep some of the parts from the 96 engine like sensors and fuel rail and throttle body and exhaust manifold you can find all the info you need here , John.

Thanks, I'll check it out.
Can you put a SL2 engine in an SL1? I know the computer will probably have to be changed, but is it all plug-n-play? Not necessarily for the performance, I just see more of those wrecked...

For a SOHC to DOHC swap.

1996:

1993-1998 DOHC engine, (1993 and 1994 engines will require the use of an EGR adaptor plate. Saturn part number 21006753).

1999 DOHC engine can also be used, but a 1999 exhaust manifold and downpipe will be needed.

Transmission, MP7 if you have an automatic, MP3 if you have a manual. Highly recommended staying within the same vehicle year for automatics.

1996 DOHC PCM with similar options. (A/C, cruise control, ABS, traction control federal emissions or California emissions and transmission type).

1996 DOHC instrument cluster.

1991-1999 Throttle cable.

1996 DOHC emissions label (located on radiator support)

Note: A new engine wiring harness is not needed. 1995+ SOHC and DOHC engines are MPFI and use the same harness.

If the engine is not complete, the following parts are compatible:

1991-1998 Power steering bracket.

1991-1998 A/C brackets.

1991-1999 Throttle cable bracket.

1991-1999 Intake manifold.

1995-1997 Fuel Rail.

1996-2000 Fuel Injectors.

1996-1997 DOHC or SOHC throttle body.

1996-1998 Ignition module.

1991-2002 Coil packs

1995-1999 EGR valve.

1993-2002 Cylinder block assembly

1991-1999 Cylinder head assembly. 1991-1994 heads will require the use of an EGR adaptor plate. Saturn part number 21006753. 1991-1995 heads will have one extra, unused temperature sensor. Use the sensor lower on the head. 1999 heads will require the use of a 1999 exhaust manifold and downpipe.

The following sensors and solenoids are compatible:

Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IAT): 1991-2002
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS): 1991-2002
Crank Position Sensor (CPS): 1991-2002
Knock Sensor (KS): 1996-1999
Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP): 1991-1999
Oxygen Sensor (O2): 1995-1999
Throttle Position Sensor (TPS): 1991-1997
Oil Pressure Sender: 1992-1996
Idle Air Control (IAC): 1991-2002
Charcoal Canister Purge Solenoid (CCP): 1996-1997

Great info - thanks. I think I'd be best off just finding a newer SOHC engine and reusing the 96 intake, exhaust etc.

I may try the ATF flush trick first and see if it cleans out the rings and reduces the oil consumption. We don't have much to lose - I bought this car for next to nothing - it needed some front end work and a valve cover gasket, it starts and runs fine, and everything works. It's a great first car for a kid that doesn't have to drive far.

Default Re: Engine/Trans Swap Guide?

So i have a 99 saturn sl1 (sohc manual transmission) and a 99 saturn sw2 (dohc and auto trans)
Trans in the wagon is going out. Engine and trans on the sedan are good but the rear trailing arms are about to rust off the body. I want to do a head swap to the sedans engine and put the engine and manual trans in the wagon.
Do i need to swap the wiring harness with it?
And is there any other issues i might run into going from auto to manual i should be aware of?

I'd pull the SOHC (with complete intake and exhaust manifold) and 5 speed out of the sedan together with the wiring harness attached and drop it in the wagon. Take the SOHC PCM and it's wire harness that that terminates at the UHJB and put it in the wagon as well. This essentially converts the SW2 into an SW1. You'd probably need part of the SOHC exhaust as well or make some modifications to the DOHC exhaust.

I'll let someone else chime in on the SOHC to DOHC head swap. I know its been done but I can't recall the details. I'd think you'd need to move over the intake and exhaust manifolds and if that's the case why wouldn't you just keep the DOHC engine? It would essentially be the same end result. I'm also not sure on which of the two PCM's would be best suited to run the DOHC engine and SOHC trans.

Just to make sure I understand - you want to end up with:
  • SW2's body
  • DOHC engine (SOHC block, SW2's head)
  • SL1's manual transmission

I'd keep the DOHC engine in the SW2 and just do an auto to manual trans swap unless there is something wrong with the DOHC. http://www.differentracing.com/tech_...anny_swap.html

PCM / ECM for each engine also has fuel maps for that engine/trans combo. The DOHC auto PCM will be fine with a DOHC engine and SOHC manual trans except: will always set transmission codes, you may notice some weak/flat spots (where the PCM says to itself, hey, time for the auto trans to shift, so I am reducing fuel). some discussion here
http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=162611

You probably don't want to use the SOHC PCM with a DOHC engine - not sure it can correct fuel enough to prevent running lean at high RPMs

I know (via PM) that the SOHC has 120k miles and the DOHC engine has 170k miles.
But pulling the head puts you pretty far into the area where, once you are in there . . . may as well do a rebuild (may as well put a new timing set on rather than the old one, since you have the head off, may as well do valves/seals, etc)

You may want to search on fetchitfido's previous posts for the wiring mod needed
