Default does broken timing chain damage valves?

Trying to find out if Saturns are interference design. My nieghbors 93 Saturn broke a timing chain and they want to know what it will take to fix it. Can I just replace the chain and tensioner or do i need to do a valve job as well?

It is an interference engine.

Im not no expert nor giving advice but from what i know about the the belts/chains breaking, there could be a little chance the valves were damaged depends on how many valves the engine has, their for removing the head to inspect, the more cylinders the more possible the damage since a 4 cylinder block has a time frame when all pistons are level but the chanced would be down to a 5%

You'll need a valve job.

You don't NECESSARILY "NEED" a valve job. An interference engine means that IF any valve is open all the way while the piston is at TDC, you will bend valves. I have gotten lucky before on a few engines. If the cam(s) stop turning quickly without a valve all the way open, the pistons may never contact any valves. This is most likely if it died at an idle.

The unasked question here is -- how did he break the timing chain? It's nearly impossible on these cars; they make an awful lot of noise before breaking. And no, it's not just a "history" question - if the answer reflects on how the car was driven (and in all likelihood, it does), it may bear on whether you want to put time into helping your neighbor.

I've bought two Saturns with broken timing chains. One was a parts car, the other was to throw a rebuilt engine into. Both people knew of the noise and ignored it. One actually took the car on a 600 mile trip with it that way.

They didnt make it home and I got a car for next to nothing. My grandfather ended up driving that car for a few years and now my brother drives it.

Lack of oil will surely do it.
