Default Good buy? 2002 Saturn SL1 102k miles...

Hi,
My brother wants to sell me his 02' SL1 102k miles for $4200. He has already had some issue with the tranny fixed and either the valve gasket or intake gasket fixed. Anyway KBB lists the blue book as $4585.
From the reviews on the site it sounds like this model year could have some serious issues...?

Your thoughts would be appreciated

If he's maintained it well it should be fine. If he's already replaced the intake gasket, that good for you since that was a factory problem that only needs replaced once. As long as he doesnt make a habit of spinning tires, and has kept up with tranny fluid changes, you could probably get at least twice the miles out of the car that he has. Not sure what the going price is, 4200 sounds a bit high, but maybe its worth it if you consider the value of knowing your brother's been maintaining the car well for its first 100k.

He has kept up with the maintenance and is a tame driver. So I don't have any fears in that respect. The 96' SL1 I bought from him @ 113k is headed for the junk yard with 198k.

Sounds about like my brother then. I bought our SC1 from him when got his VUE and wouldn't mind ending up with the VUE eventually when he gets tired of it and gets something else. I'd say go for '02.

I know its your brother, but if he isn't hurting for cash offer him $3800 and have him meet you somewhere in between.

All he did was go to KBB and take 400 off of the blue book. There is an engine code and the engine misses occasionally. I was going to take it to Autozone and have them read the code/s. I'll try to get him down a little more if the codes don't seem too bad...

Edmunds says $3685 and KBB says $4585? Which one is more reliable?

without really knowing anything about the car, NADA rates the car for around $4950. I would imagine that KBB and NADA would be the preferred places to check.

post the codes here, and someone will be sure to let you know how to fix it, and/or how bad it is.

I'd pay that for that, given that it's in good shape and has been well maintained. I'd NEVER buy a car from my brother, but he's a maniac.

I also would pay that much given that it's comfy inside and all the options that are there work (cruise, air, etc)... I'd want cruise for sure, especially if it's an Automatic because they can take off on ya...

If my partner were serious and had the cash, it sounds like it'd be a good one for him

Auto Zone read the SES codes and told us that the oxygen sensor was getting slow and that cyl. 1 was misfiring. I looked through the repair records and found that the plugs are only 12k miles old. He did have the intake gasket replaced last year because of a misfiring cyl. 1. So this could be something simple like a plug wire or the stupid gasket again. Does Saturn warranty their work? The gasket was replaced 22k miles ago. I don't think the plug wires have ever been replaced.

thanks for your input

Holy Crap! I just dug deeper into the repair files and found that the intake manifold gasket was replaced at 49k miles under warranty and again at 79k miles which my brother paid $462! What the @$%#$#! Is the gasket a piece of @!@!#$!@#% or something?
So now the 1st cyl. is acting up again!

Replace the ECTS with the brass type.

Replace the intake manifold gasket again. I made a how-to with pictures. Wouldnt pay over 4K for it tho. Bought by '02 for 4k 2 years ago.
