Default Does your PRNDL light up?

Okay, so it's really PRNDIL on the AURA, but you know what I mean. On your AURA, do the letters light up or otherwise indicate which gear you've selected? Mine does not and I thought it odd since there is no PRNDL indicator in the instrument cluster. I have a very early '07 XE. Could this be a running change?

I thought it was normal until I saw this ebay auction for a new AURA shifter with "PRNDL lighting included".

After you depress the button to get out of park, let go of it. One pull puts it in reverse, and if you keep pulling it stops in Drive. why it doesn't light up is strange to me, but no big deal.

Saves GM a few cents by not having to illuminate it, of course.

Interesting. I guess you can find anything..I mean anything on eBay. I just e-mailed a seller about his offer of a leather kit for the 2000 Saturn Aura. I guess he stripped down a prototype and is selling its parts..

I'm not sure if mine lights up or not. I'll check the next time I drive at night.

Checked my PRNDM tonight and it was illuminated, not brightly and the lights didn't change according to the selector position but the letters were lit.

I am not complaining, just making an observation. It seems odd that they backlight the shifter but there is no indicator. My '05 Malibu Maxx had the PRNDL indicator in the instrument cluster and used a similar shifter. I get the impression that as the car was being developed, both teams removed the indicator and it was missed. I'll just chalk it up to quirkiness.

Thanks all, I should have been more specific. My concern is that the car does not indicate which gear is selected. I've done some digging and, based on your feedback confirming this is intentional and not an assembly defect, this appears to be a violation of FMVSS 102 section 3.1.4:
S3.1.4.1 Except as specified in S3.1.4.3, if the transmission shift
lever sequence includes a park position, identification of shift lever
positions, including the positions in relation to each other and the
position selected, shall be displayed in view of the driver whenever any
of the following conditions exist:
(a) The ignition is in a position where the transmission can be
shifted.
(b) The transmission is not in park.
I know it seems minor but I had someone borrow my car and make a shifting mistake. It's not a big deal but it violates federal safety standards. I've contacted Saturn and NHTSA. Thank you all for your help.

SEEMS MINOR? Ya Think?
Who the heck would know anything about FMVSS 102 section 3.1.4: or what FMVSS was?
You must be a NHTSA Lawyer or a Ford Lawyer not a automotive enthusiast

Oh puleeeeeze

I guess I just don't get it. I don't have any trouble knowing what gear my car is in. I have never heard of or read about anyone knowing what gear any car was in. Been driving cars 42 years, never had any issue knowing what gear I was in. Different cars indicate this in different ways. The Aura indicates it by the way the shifter lines up next to the letters on the shift gate. It is not terribly difficult.

Want trouble knowing what gear you're in? Get in a Ferrari. You can't imagine.

Look, I don't mean to sound harsh here. However....we are all adults. Take some responsibility, look at things, analyze them a little bit. No one needs to go running to the "authorities" complaining they can't tell what gear they have shifted into in their car. We certainly need more litigation in this world. If you are having that much difficulty then maybe you need to go buy a car that better suits your needs.

A few times I put my Aura in manual instead of drive and didn't notice until it didn't shift to second. So even if it had the gear indicator on the dash I wouldn't have noticed since the Aura shows a big M and gear number.

As a side note my Firebird failed inspection because the previous owner installed a center console from a newer Firebrid. The problem is that the manual transmission shift pattern is a part of the console, the new one was for a 6 speed instead of a 5 speed. But anyone not familiar with a car would look for reverse and slowly let the clutch out to make sure they're in the right gear.

Although an overly cautious law, it is there for a reason. Stupid people are among us.

Every since Ralph Nader hit the courtrooms we have had to spend Billions and Billions of dollars to protect stupid uncaring people from themselves and others.
I think that if you can't or don't want to learn how to drive a car well, you shouldn't have a license and should be banned from driving.
We should have a higher standard of competency for operating a motor vehicle and stick to it. This would eliminate millions of cars from the highways, and save tens of thousands of lives and billions of dollars in insurance payouts (reducing premiums), highway wear and tear (reducing tax dollars for road repairs) every year. Your commute to work would be faster and less stressful reducing the average commuters blood pressure savings more lives and reducing the cost of your prescription costs.
The effects are never ending and all good, as more people would have to take the buss reducing the CO2 emissions and stopping global warming.

Keeping stupid drivers out of cars could be the best thing for everyone on the plannet, especially you and me and other people that love to drive.
