Default Hole in my exhaust???

Hey guys,
I have a 1995 saturn sc2. I bought the car this year used, and since i have owned it, i was curious to know if maybe my exhaust had a hole in it, for these reasons. When the engine is warm and i coast, especially in 3rd gear, a loud crackling noise comes from the exhaust, as well as when i down shift sometimes. There is no direct visible hole on the exhaust from looking under. Any ideas guys?

Running rich can also cause a back fire. Also, maybe dirty injectors. Is the car louder even at idle? It usually pretty easy to know when a Saturn has an exhaust leak, even without looking. YOu probably do have a hole somewhere, you just can't see it. At the Y-pipe is a common place, and not always easily spotted.

Another place to look is at the ends of the flex pipe. two hose clamps at each end is all you need for this repair

Also, have you replaced your Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor? If not then do it. Your resin tipped sensor is probaly cracked or will be soon. the new ones are brass and will last the life of you car. Your car has two sensors, you should replace the one with the 2-wire connector. Details for replacement can be found as a sticky in the how-to library.

Use a rag over your hand to try and block the tailpipe. If there is a leak, it will get much louder. If not, you probably won't be able to seal the tailpipe unless you happen to kill the engine.

Another trick - do a Seafoam steam treatment while an assistant looks under the car (or vice-versa). The exhaust will smoke, of course, but if you have an inline exhaust leak, you'll see smoke from the leak as well. I've been sitting on a manifold-to-downpipe gasket leak that I discovered late last fall when doing this procedure.
