Default 02 KW300 v6 auto. Cradel swap- PS rack question

TYpo there. It's an LW not KW !

Started cradle swap. Radiator has support and my sway bar and tie rod ends are free. My two 18mm bolts loose on the Power steering rack. It's still resting on the frame, of course. I don't see a practical way to suspend it for the impending cradle drop later.

I see recommendations to suspend the pS rack for the S series teardown. But how about the LW wagon? Will the steering box (to the steering column ) above it, suspend it appropriately?

I have heavy solid wire and can suspend the tie rod shafts in the (outer) wheel well on both sides. Would that suffice? My power steering lines are old and I don't want a bunch of extreme travel on this rack for that reason.

I'm about to knock out the lower control arm bearing and pull the a-frames, and I've got to build my engine support tree. So I'm going to move on and hopefully one of you kind gentlemen can advise.

Thanks !

Well I don't see my post under "new posts" . So I guess anyone who accidentally comes across me and my "KiloWatt" 300 Wagon thread, here's a picture for your time.
The wooden beam assembly is actually level. I have cutouts for the 13mm fender bolts down by the fender, they engage so nothing slides forward.
I have more project pictures but I got to keep it light with this laptop.
.
So at this point I need to get the engine secured, and pull the mounts. Still need to decide weather to hang the PS rack.

That is a nice cradle, I would just wire your rack to the back of your cradle for some support.

To the beam, yeah, might as well I guess.
I have the afternoon off. I might go out there and get the rusty subframe dropped today.

These straps are supposed to be 1500Lb capacity with 500Lb "working" load each. I guess we'll find out.

-The rear engine mount's unbolted ( I pulled the 3x16mm bolts to the mounting bracket ) because I don't want to deal with the limited access that main bolt in the bushing is going to offer on reassembly.
-Front mount bolt is in about 4 spins. Ready to pull.
-PS unit has her hanger. I have a wire hooked on the firewall and looped it around the piston.
-Got 1 turn started on 4 cradle bolts with the breaker bar. Looks like the nut clips are staying put. The impact wrench will take it from here. The remaining two I'll deal with at show time.
-Engine supported underneath so my hangers are not at full load.
-Still do not see any hydraulic line mounts that need detached from the frame.

A couple hours today on this. Then it got too hot. Like 90f in there.
Next round out there should be frame swap..

The engine and the transmission are actually suspended by a mount on both ends bolted to the body. The torque struts bolt to the removable cradle so all you are doing is keeping the engine from swinging.

I know about the front (engine) one when I did the timing. The serpentine runs through it as well . But if you're saying there's one to the body in the tail, that's good news. Thanks. I thought I was actually supporting it.

I guess they are torque struts, then.

Frame's in tonight. Torque arms bolted back down. PS rack back in. Some notes.. ..

I had to stop while dropping the old frame and support the PS unit. It needed additional hanging support.
The silver shaft was coming out of the steering box. I wasn't under there with a phone, but this Goolge photo was pretty much it

Only other episode was you can see in the other picture I have stands under the rotors. I needed to lower the car a bit while lining up the new frame.
This action disturbed the passenger transaxle position and it apparently popped out inside the trans (or boot). Next time I'll just let them hang. I just popped it back in, like a bad knee. Seems engaged ok.

It lives on. I ran Geo Metros for about 8 years and watched the rust belt cars struggle with unibody frame horn failure. Most of the East coast cars are gone now but there are still Metros running around in Oregon.

Lol Yeah. The old frame has lots of patches, but I can't get the tops of the horns without dropping the frame. So rust always wins.

It will be an antique in about 7 years. I'll undercoat the new frame in the near future. I didn't want to deal with seasoning it pre-install.

Nice job. I use Harbor Freight's Engine support rig on mine. But I've not done a 300 just the 4 cyl. I think it was $60.

Nice deal. It's not like you can't use it on another car.

I was offered to borrow one.. from one of the employees from the same shop that failed inspection on the car for frame rust. Thought it would have been tacky to borrow it though, since I never let them do any of the service... just inspect.

Well the A -frame is grey because the bushings were good but it had plenty of blistering surface rust. I wouldn't bolt it to the frame before resurfacing it.
Grinder and strip wheel left plenty of bare metal that the whole thing needed coated. New rotors and pads as well.

The painted caliper and hanger I have no excuse for. But when you're throwing the pads and rotors, that's the perfect time to paint them.
Throw cardboard in front of the strut and have at it . Anything that's over sprayed you are throwing out anyway.
Hey. Let me live the dream. The calipers will be black in 3 weeks anyway.

.
The pink tape is to remind me to torque the lug nuts 100fp before driving. Both wheels are still in the air.
Wish I could keep it like this. Dang thing looks like a gasser.

This picture pretty much tells the story, huh?

I just have to snap the front exhaust pipe back up tomorrow and this is done.

Here's the fore mentioned cradle photo for future reference.

Google photo highlighting steering rack shaft referred to earlier.
