2008 AURA XR
Default So.. what tires are folks switching to?

I'm picking up an '08 XR next week.
The OEM Goodyears get horrible reviews at the major web sites like Tirerack or DiscountTire .
There aren't many 18" tires available in the XR's size of 225/50/18.
Goodyear Eagle F1s seem to be the best available.
Dunlop SP Sport Max also shows up but the wear rating is much lower than the Goodyear's.
Any opinions? There's never a shortage of opinions at this website.

I got the F1's on my XR. Worth every penny. It really improves the handling of the car. They are also harder to break lose. Though they are more jumpy then the LS2's. Meaning the tires will tend to take the steering wheel out from under you. Just have a firm grip on the steering wheel( with both hands) and you'll be fine.

I just bought a XE and the tires are number 1 on my list of gripes. I am going with the Goodyear Eagle F1's. Expensive, but it's like when I buy new shoes. I always buy the best ones for my feet. These seem the best for the car that I can see in a decent price range...

I agree. I made a deal with a local tire store and will get the Goodyear F1s the day I take delivery. They are giving me an allowance for the OEM Goodyears. Out the door price is about the same as Tirerack after shipping and finding a place for mounting and balancing; plus I get tire hazard coverage from a local store, rotation, etc.
Last year I bought Falkens for my Audi from a guy in Florida. The shipping charge was big. I had to find a place to mount and balance - Saturn dealer was best price!!! Within a month I picked up a nail and the repair/plug didn't take - had to buy another tire. I saved nothing.

I put Nokian WR G2 tires on my XR. They're a winter optimized all season.

I should have mentioned that I needed to change wheels as the WR G2 tires aren't available in 18 inch. I've got 17" Borbet CA wheels. My local tire dealer is a Tire Rack affiliate and got the wheels from them. Tire Rack doesn't carry Nokian but my local dealer does. The tires are 235/55R17 and are about the same diameter as the OEM tires/18" wheels so my speedometer calibration shouldn't be far off. The TPMS sensors swapped from the OE wheels with no problem.

Right now I have the Borbet center caps on the wheels but I think the Saturn caps will fit. I'm going to try to putting the Saturn caps on when it comes time to rotate the tires.

Is anyone interested in buying a set of stock 18" wheels and tires? The wheels are like new and the tires only have 7000 miles on them.

Bertillion, aren't Hankook Optimos the standard OEM tire for XE models?

On the other hand, 225/50/17 is a tire size not limited to Epsilon-platform vehicles and you'll have a wider array of choices than XR owners.

When my Max is ready for new shoes, I'll be replacing the RSA's with F1s. The F1s are well worth the $188/tire.

Yep. My tires spin pretty easy. I know from my experience with the Ion that the Goodyear's will be good tires. I am going to wait for some warmer weather though to get them.

Found these fit off of 1010tire.com. They are Hankooks and seem to be getting good reviews but it's marketed for SUVs?

I dont know why the LS2's get such bad reviews, we have 15K on ours and for the price they are a good tire. All the others in the 18" size cost twice as much. I do notice that people complain that they dont grip as well and brand so and so. Brand so and so didnt have to warranty the product like GM and Goodyear since this is an oem fitment tire. They an all season tire designed to last 3 years/36K and I think folks expect them to be race car tires.

No people just expect when they get a 25k car that it comes with a decent set of tires. They want tires that get good traction and are not such a loud tire. I dont blame them. I want that plus the option of choosing from multiple tire manufacturers when i do want to replace the factory tires.

I miss my bf goodrich traction t/a's.

I also have the original factory tires on my XR, and I live just outside of Buffalo, NY. Never had an issue with them. I lease my car so I'm not about to replace tires.

IMHO, it's not the tires that make the difference in the snow, it's the driver. Slow down and take your time.

You got it all wrong Wolf, I don't want new tires because the LS2's suck in snow (even though that is a fact!) I wan't new tires so when I lay into them when it's warm and dry, they grip instead of spinning. If I wanted to "slow down", I would have bought a car with a 4 cylinder engine!

I stand by what I posted. Tires work good for me in the winter or the summer. Trust me, I have pushed them to the limits and am happy with them.

As previously stated, if I purchased the car it may be a different story.

I'm picking up a '08 XR on Monday and I'm already thinking about swapping the stock tires out after reading all the poor reviews on them

Thinking about the Goodyear Assurance TripleTred's in 225/50/18, of course:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....e1=yes&place=6

I know everyone is probably gonna recommend the F1 A/S, but these tires have got nothing but great reviews and they're a little cheaper & have a high wear rating

I was running dedicated snow tires on my Redline this past winter, but I think for the XR I'm just gonna get a good all season tire instead & I think these would do the trick.

Now I just gotta talk my dealer into doing the swap before I take delivery and giving me some credit for the LS-2's....LOL
