Default 98 SL 2 I'm interested in buying. I have questions and concerns.

Recently I found a 98 SL 2 with 175k miles.

This is an interesting car due to the fact that apparently it's had the entire engine and exhaust replaced.

The person who posted this ad on Craigslist posted the invoice for the work done. I called the shop about this repair that was done back in 2010. The man I spoke to after providing the name on the invoice remember the car and verified after I gave him the VIN number. The engine was replaced with a Japser engine and the exhaust was replaced as well. Along with a new clutch and cat converter.

The car after this work was done has had 32k put on it. The previous owner was a older gentleman and he passed away so his son is now selling.

However after a back and forth communication with the seller, I had him scan the car for a check engine light.

Popped a code for P0420 which I believe is the cat.

This isn't making sense to me. If this cat was replaced in 2010 and has 32k on it... How has it already gone bad and needs to be replaced?

Some advice would be great.

My '98 SC2 has a P0420. I'd replace the rear O2 sensor but that is not really an option. Too rusty. I can't find my picture. If you don't have inspection in your state don't worry about it at all.

There are two faults in your logic:

1) P0420 does not mean the cat is bad. It could be the cat, or wiring (including any fuses/relays, or O2 sensor, or even the PCM itself

2) Cats do not have a specific mile/time lifespan. They can be ruined very quickly (1 day of driving?) if the fueling is way off for some reason.

could also be an exhaust leak - like at the flex pipe
