Default TAAT transmission

Hi all,

I have a problem, my automatic transmission gets some problems (needs a serious repair), so I decided to change it.
I've found looking good used transmission from S-series sedan 2000 year. But this transmission is from sedan SOHC auto.
Does this transmission the same as in my SC1 SOHC 2001 Canadian ?
As I got to know from different internet sources, TAAT transmission is used in all S series. It not changed from 1996 to 2002. Is it true?
Maybe anyone already changed AT in own auto?

Thanks,
Vlad

You will be fine as long as you use an auto transmission from another SOHC engine(SL, SL1 or SC1).

The gearing is different for the DOHC transmission. The DOHC transmission is geared more for performance while the SOHC transmission is geared for fuel economy. From what I understand, the PCM will set codes if you use the wrong one.

Once more questions: Where can I find any electronic manual for TAAT transmission? There are no information in Haynes repair manual. There are only described steps to change trans assembly module.

eXmortal: welcome and greetings to Belarus!

one possibility for information:
on eBay they offer various Saturn service manuals in CD and DVD form
that would avoid having to ship a bulky set of manuals overseas

if you have specific diagnostic code problems just post them up here and we can help out

good luck!

There are no transmission error codes available
My saturn is over 360K kilometers, so I think that trans assembly wears out.
Fluid is fine, and I've just change it.
Problem is that I have heavy snatching while switching the gears, especially when down from 4 to 2.

Gear slamming is sometimes a valve body problem or an electrical one, and the transmission internals can still be in good shape.

Changing the valve body, the rectangular thing on top of the case, under the battery, is rather easy.

Though I do understand if you happen upon a nice low mileage transmission, changing the whole thing for peace of mind.

A thorough check of all the electrical connections to the trans as well as battery and alternator health is also a good idea.

Thanks, I'll check all the connections related AT.
But there are not only shifting problem in my AT. It needs change friction clutch disks ASAP. I feel some abnormal scrolls during change gear from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. So I don't thing that is electrical problem.

Does anyone has such problem?

There are no special services where I can repair my Saturn available in Minsk.
So I need to make repair by myself.

eXmortal it's probably not your problem but, it could be and it's cheap. Get your charging system and battery checked. Sometimes the first symptom is weird shifting.

Oh and just in case it wasn't made clear. A DOHC automatic transmission cannot be made to work on an SOHC car. The PCM detects the gearing difference and will not shift.

BarnOwl thanks.

I'll check my electrical system this weekend. About DOHC AT I understand.

I found SATURN TAAT - ATSG TECHNICAL MANUAL on ebay.
For example http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SATUR...spagenameZWD1V
Is it good manual? Does anybody use it?

Thanks.

I haven't looked at that manual. I have a set of FSMs but, I have seen several recommendations for it on here. So, it's probably pretty good.

That manual looks pretty good to me. If you're hardcore enough to tear into your tranny... that's great!

Know that the firmness and timing of the shifts is controlled by the computer driving the solenoids in the valve body, it is not a traditional mechanical transmission with governors, accumulators, and little check balls.

There is a fuse labelled "LPS" for "Line Pressure Solenoid", if it is pulled you will have incredibly harsh shifts. If you're surious about how your trans works pull this and go for a short drive.

Well. I've changed my old broken transmission to another one at last. So long time were spent for transport used trans from USA to Belarus.
But I have another problem: we set another transmission, change oil (Mobil ATF320) and start to drive. At first car is driven fine, but through half an hour check engine is set, and car can move correctly forward. It twitching? but not move.

P1816 error code is available, what should I do with it? Should I replace Trans Range Switch with another one?

For example like this http://www.ctpowertrain.com/servlet/...S-RANGE/Detail

Thanks

It's late but, since no one answered, I'll give it a shot. Two things to check for. Is the ground connection (black and white striped wire) connected to the range switch? I managed to get the wire caught between the engine and tranny when I went back together. Second is your cable adjusted properly?

I can't find a pic and I my wife's already driven off in the only Saturn I have right now with an automatic. I'll try to explain. The thing that the shift cable connects to is the transmission range switch. There are three wire harnesses that connect to it. One has a single black and white striped wire and it goes on with a spade connector. It's the one the closest to the driver's side. If that's not connected or it's screwed up somehow, you'll gets some strange codes.

Thanks, I understand. I have a strange thing, I tried to adjust range switch, as I read in alldata. At first I set D mode and found continuity between connector A and B, after that I tightened switch to case bolts. continuity is present, but when I switch to another mode and return to D - there are not continuity. It is very strange. I disassembled switch module and find that connector that influence to continuity in D mode has very small length. I have another broken range switch, connector is the same. I don't understand how it work.

Every is fine. transmission works fine. We fount a trouble

I have problem with exhaust system. Catalytic convector is blocked, so exhaust gas cannot be passed through it. EGR valve was opened by out pressure and exhaust gas incomes to input collector. Currently we blocked EGR valve and make outlet before catalytic convector.

Now I'll waiting a new catalytic convector from USA. I bought Walker part.
Shipping is not so fast, it will spent wore than 2 weeks, there are no parts available in local stores for saturn at all
