Default do all saturns do this

so my 98 sl2 whenever started idles at 1200-1300 and the idle slowly goes down as it warms up. it idles at about 875 once it hits about 175 degrees. why does it idle so high ? is that normal.

Mine doesn't idle that high once started.. Its about 800 even from cold.

Not sure why yours would start off so high, i'm sure others will have a better idea why.

I think it's pretty common. Of course it also depends on the ambient temp but, have you cleaned the TB as shown in Richpin's video? The IAC port can get plugged.

Mine does exactly that. Cold starts around 1200-1300 and settles to 750 as it warms up. I figure it's normal as I have a clean TB, new TPS and properly functioning IACv.

most cars though in my experience once you start driving it stops. mine when i push clutch in at the stop signs leaving my street will hold the high revs. i hate it. once im driving i want it to be normal. i guess we cannot have everything.

Yes it seems standard for cold start. Kind of acts like choke idle on a carbed car. Just not as high.

There's something wrong if it runs at 800 rpm at a cold start. Check the IAC valve (clean the throttle body) and confirm proper ECTS operation.

As everyone else has said, the OP's description is exactly what it should to. Increased rpms make it warm up faster, reducing emissions and engine wear (running cold causes more wear than running at a higher rpm). It also reduces the chance of stalling and other driveability issues associated with a cold engine/climate.

Even many carburated engines had this operation integrated into the automatic choke system.

Mine will rev to 1800 rpm's for a couple of seconds then drop down to 1200 and continue with the warm-up process. It has done that since I bought the car 2 years ago and even after I cleaned the TB, EGR, and replaced the ects and t-stat to fix a temp issue. Never could figure out why it did this.

Almost all vehicles do that on a cold start in order to help warm the engine. I have had cars that had a bad Idle Speed Control Motor that wouldn't work correctly and cause a low cold idle, at times this would make the vehicle very hard to keep running while cold.
