Happy Should it stay or should it go?...

Iíve decided Iím buying a new car and unless I get kicked out for not having enough of a credit history Iíll likely get something in the next month or so.

The question is.. which car to trade, sell on the side of the road and which to keep?

1998 Mercury Tracer GS
95,500
Power Steering
Manual Locks, Doors, Windows
No Rear Defrost!?!?
No Internal Trunk Release
Tires are very good
Mechanically very good
CD/MP3/WMA, USB, AUX, SD
Body near perfect, minor scuff bumper
No accidents, 2nd owner

1998 Saturn SL
150,000
No Power Steering
Manual Locks, Doors, Windows
Rear Defrost
Internal Trunk Release
Tires as bald as a my father
Burns oil
CD/MP3/WMA, USB, AUX, SD
Front bumper dent
1 minor accident.. Car vs Deer.. Car 1 Ė Deer -1

Looking at the prices for trading in Iíd only get a $100 or $200 more for the Tracer! Although side of the road value would be higher for the Tracer up to around $1,800 or $2,000. Tracer would make a more appealing sale with the auto transmission and under mileage. Although I could keep the Tracer and trade in the SL and then wouldnít have to deal with all the buyers than donít read the advert that canít drive a manual car. Then again our mechanic when last checking out the SL said it was in good mechanical condition for its age and said it was the best looking SL at that age heíd seen which is good. He also said the Tracer looked near new underneath and weíve just done the timing belt on the Tracer.

So what would you do? Trade the Saturn and keep the Ford? Sell the Ford and keep the Saturn remembering to top up the oil every 1,500 miles lol. The cards are stacked against the SL are they not?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

That's exactly what I'm thinking.. now if I can hammer one of the dealers down enough on price have them accept the Saturn and take their $500 off coupon on that new car we could be making some progress lol

That's what I was thinking trade in the SL it's been a great car I've no doubt we'd hit 200k in it as long as we keep the oil in check. We paid $2,500 for it used with 82k on it over 4 years ago I think we got our monies worth and more!

Keep the Tracer, sell the SL and stay away from the new car lot, period.

That Tracer has a lot of miles left in it, you just did the timing belt, from your description it's in great shape all around.

Why are you wanting a new car with higher registration, fees, insurance and above all, payments ? That gets real old after the first couple of years, especially once the "thrill" of having a new car wears off.

For what you will pay for the one new car you could run both of those that you have well into the next decade and still save money. The cost of tires for your SL will scarcely equal what you will lose in depreciation the minute you drive off the lot in the new one.

What are you looking at as a replacement, BTW?

And if you just want a new car because it's fresh new and has all the gadgets, sell em both and don't look back.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!
