Default Rattles And Clunking Noises.

Does anyone have these issues with their Saturn's going over bumps or turning corners ? I have a rattle in the front end on both sides going over any bump, small or large and a clunk in the right front wheel area turning corners, including at slow speeds like into the garage. Everything is tight that I can tell. I just replaced the strut mounts last year, front and rear as well as the front struts and mounts, tie rod ends, both inner and outer and inspected the control arm bushings and all look good. No broken springs as well. I need some suggestions to look for. I've run out of things to check. I don't hear anything on my Son's '03 like that. Thanks in advance.

That rattle is very likely your sway bar bushings. They make a distinct clicking/rattle noise when they go bad. Easy to replace.

The clunking is probably the steering intermediate shaft needing lubrication. Search for tips on this forum on how to lube.

I have found the sway bar links fail and cause clunks in the front ends.

^^^ Never had any clunks from the sway bar links on my L's but possible. We are saying the same thing. I called them bushings should have said links.

Just like the OP, I had a clicking/rattle noise that I could not find. It was the link that was bad. Had that same noise to appear on another one of my L's and knew just where to look. It was the links here as well.

BTW, Moog makes a quality link that has grease zerks. It's a little pricey but hopefully will last longer than the OEM since those are sealed and can not be lubed.

I had a persistent rattling in the rear that was annoying along with a wire or something rattling in either passenger front or rear door. After four new struts, front strut mounts, rear steel bushings replaced, rattling remained. A trip to a tire shop for wheel balancing pointed to worn rear sway bar bushings. I always had the car up on jacks so sway bars were always stressed. Once I crawled under the rear and pushed/pulled on the sway bar, looseness/rattling was verified. It never occurred to me for sway bar rubbers to shrink and promote a semi metallic rattle. Too lazy to buy local expensive rubbers or wait for rockauto, I used cut strips of plastic tie wraps inserted between sway bar and rubber bushing to make the clamps fit tighter, taking up any slop. Noise gone. Perhaps when I get around to ordering from rockauto, I'll order a pair for the rears. I haven't crawled under the front to check on the front rubber bushings for the sway bar yet so both will wait until next spring.

Both door panels were removed over a two week period, concentrating on where wires may rattle. Twisting wires and lubing the power window hinges didn't stop the rattling. A few days later, wherever wire rattling behind a door occurred disappeared..........

^^^OK, let's look back at the other parts you replaced earlier. Did you use GM front strut mounts? Many members have reported problems with aftermarket front strut mounts. Pierrot has several posts which details the issues.

Do a search for his posts on this subject. This may be your culprit.

Sabilizer bar ? According to the internet there's no sway bar on it, or is that basically the same thing ? You can't get bushings for it at the part stores here which is a joke. Where I work, they don't even list them for mine. It comes with the whole bar kit, not single bushings. I have to make sure that's what it is first before I replace or order anything. I haven't been under it yet to verify the bushings. Only using a flashlight with my friend rocking it. Stay tuned !

I checked everything with a pry bar and can't find any loose items. When you rock the car on the side it clunks you can hear and see the stabilizer link moving up and down if someone's rocking it and watching under the tire. The bushings looks good to me. Stabilizer links are tight. No idea what's going on.

Would you mind identifying which brand of strut mount was used when the struts were replaced?

Just a very cheap suggestion..... By a spary can of silicone lubricant (PB Blaster does one) and spray the rubber bushings on the sway bar. That will at the very least make them move but make noise and it also protects the rubber. If you still have bangs and thumps, then you know to look elsewhere.

I would be happy for you if a sway bar link (or links) was bad instead of a strut mount (or mounts). Should it turn out to be a link, I would recommend purchasing a brand using sealed joint ends. The OE parts have lasted a long time without them. Further, there were no greasable factory installed suspension parts from the beginning. Why bother greasing something when a sealed part will maintain its lubricant internally for many years to come? Besides, if you don't own a grease gun then you don't have to go out and buy one just because you purchased a part which forced you to do so.

I don't know what I did but I took a pry bar and pried on the stabilizer bar and the clunking stopped and hasn't done it since. That doesn't make sense. Anyway it's quiet now, even turning when it did it then as well. Hope it stays that way. Whatever's caused the problem has to still be there because that wouldn't fix it. Don't know about that one. We'll see if it comes back in time.

I did check the rear SB bushings and there is a slight gap in them. The problem is I can't find rear bushings, only the front and I replaced those and it did correct the front right rattle. I had a hell of a time finding them because they were all out of stock. Now they're all over online. Now I have to find the rears. A tech did tell me I could wrap duct tape around the bar and see if it stopped when I had the front problem. I may try that with the rears and see if it stops that. If so, there's a 2005 L300 at the yard that the bushings appeared to be tight on those w/no gap. If the tape works, I may have to pull those until I can find new rears, if that's ever possible.

The rear stabilizer bar bushings are available from OE parts websites and are inexpensive. An example parts web page is linked below.

https://www.gmpartscenter.net/auto-p...uspension-scat (item #16 on the parts diagram...It appears that the bushings could be ordered from a local dealership and cost less overall compared to an online order as there probably wouldn't be any shipping charges.)

P/N 90496706 rear stabilizer bar bushings are for all L-Series sedans and wagons regardless of engine size from '00 to '05.
