2005 VUE 2.2L
Default P0420 and P0480 Codes

I have an '05 2.2L Saturn Vue and it recently had both the P0420 and P0480 codes pull up while driving to my college (a roughly 300 mile trip). Since then I've made the trip back home twice and it seems that my MPG is lowered, with usually having to fill up with approximately a quarter tank left and 200 miles into the trip. On the last trip I also noticed like a rattling/grinding noise of a non-metal object under the hood towards the dash on the passenger side when I am driving at highway speeds for longer periods of time. The noise goes away after the car has been driven at city speeds or has been turned off for awhile, but promptly comes back when I reach highway speeds again or accelerate quickly. I am not sure if the problems are all related or completely separate, does anyone have any suggestions/advice? I read in some other thread that the lower MPG and the codes may be due to a bad ECM, but I am at a lost on the rattling/grinding noise.

The P0420 is catalytic converter below threshold. Basically the converter is toast, more than likely that is your rattling noise as well. The catalyst material has broken up inside the cat. For the other code I believe it relates to the cooling fan but I'm not sure exactly what it is. Does the cooling fan work?

Would the noise really be from the catalytic converter if it sounds like it is coming from around the engine and only at higher RPMs? The cooling fan works just fine. I erased the codes today and drove around for a little bit, only up to speeds around 45 MPH. Still hear the rattling noise, but the codes have yet to come back on. I'm certain they will when I go home again.

Your '05 Vue uses a two speed cooling fan. Low speed uses a resistor and it sometimes burns out. It's located in the driver's side wheel well after removing the front part of the splash shield. Search threads for pictures. They disintegrate after normal wear and tear with intermittent loss of low speed fan cooling. High speed bypasses this resistor. This would be problem if you use a/c as low speed is always used when a/c creates heat in the condenser coils where this heat flows back into the radiator. Low speed cooling allows a constant air flow for local stop and go driving to prevent engine overheating. In cold weather and no a/c use, low speed cooling isn't needed. If coolant overheats, high speed cooling still works.

I haven't experienced any problems with overheating yet. When and what type of driving would I have to be doing in order to experience over heating?

If you never experienced overheating, it would be wise to take suggestions given before it occurs at the worst possible moment. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Your choice when advice and suggestions are free from members sharing.

I got to thinking, maybe the exhaust manifold is cracked. Haven't seen that problem many times but it does happen from time to time and that could set the P0420 code.

I just had the P0420 issue as mentioned on my 04 Vue with a rattling noise. I had the front cat replaced (MagnaFlow® - Direct Fit Federal Catalytic Converter with Header - tem # 62247291 from carid, com) and all is now well. As far as the P0480 there is a post 155986 and 136254 which might help. Sorry cannot post links yet
