Default engine idles funny

i have a Saturn and it normally idles at a stop at 1000 rpms however it started to make a clunking sound in the engine and my rpms dropped to 500 rpms my inter lights dimmed and the car almost staled out. ti only lasted a second and the rpms went back up to just under a 1000rpms and the car was fine.

You need to have your starting/charging system tested. It sounds like you may have an alternator problem.

Just the one time or more? Could be a lot of things. See if any codes were thrown.

Mine has done this since I bought it a few years ago. Most my s series do it. I have voltage meters for my amps(sound system) and when the idle drops for a second the voltage drops to 12.7 and immediately back to 14.5 like normal. I've chased it forever and finally pushed it off as the alternator is cycling on or something which causes a momentary load and the engine quickly catches up. I don't know about the sound though you're hearing??

I had a similar problem a few months ago. Eventually my car started
misfiring (dont know if original problem was related) ultimately i had to
replace the ign. control module and coils and havent had a problem since.

If I had to guess, I would go with the ICM/Coils or some other related as being intermittent due to corrosion or beginning to fail.

Once in a great while I will get a stumbling after engine has reached temperature and it will clear itself in pretty quick order and then be fine. It is so seldom and always clears up that I cannot isolate. I've cleaned EGR, TB, and replaced wires, plugs, thermostat, etc.

ECTS is good also.

Only remaining variable is fuel pump but it keeps on pumping and this symptom is years old.

One thing I notice, is that if I am stopped somewhere, my old S would do this with the higher mileage engine whenever the fan would kick on. I think it has to do with the end rush current 'taxing' how much power is required to start the fan up when it reaches the temperature causing the fan to kick on.

Assuming that you are at 1000 rpm and sitting after driving, the temps are up enough to where the fan may kick on.

Pay attention next time it happens, to see if it is the fan kicking on while you are sitting! Let us know!
