I posted this somewhere else, but here goes

just to give you an idea of the traveling involved I drive 100 miles round trip to work, 85% freeway.

my best 39/mpg
my average 35/mpg
my worst 30/mpg

ION 2 manual bare bones

there are other things than speed that effect mpg such as
AC, driving with windows partially or fully open, aggressive driving, and my favorite hurry up, I can't wait to catch the next light.

38.8 is my best. 65 MPH cruise on the NJ turnpike. I just finished a 2100 mile road trip though. I got a consistent 33 with a loaded down car and speeds varying from 65-80. Worst I got was 29.99 with speeds at or above 80 for an entire tank. With 2 people the ion is an excellent road trip car

OK, maybe it was a little off-the-wall comment. actually I don't hit too many lights because I know how to time them, and if you see a light turn red aprox 1/2 mile back do you continue your rate of speed and hit the brakes when needed or as I do, shift into neutral and coast to the light which usually changes before I reach it.

your call on which sounds more wasteful

The best recorded from our 06 manual was 37.8, and I can't remember the best for the 07 auto, but it couldn't have been much over 30.

Based on my experiences you are doing well. I used to top out at around 36-37 mpg on my 2.2 L automatic and have done 35 mpg with my 2.4 L automatic. My best mileage has always been achieved with the car on cruise control set around 65 mph. I really never drive long distances on cruise at 50 mph to see if I could get better mpg at a lower speed.

I would have to question where you do 80 to 100 mph around Lewistown? I suspect speeds like that are possible along the re-built stretches of 322 but I have always found that road to be well patrolled by the PSP.

I'd say that the majority of fuel is used in getting the car moving. The faster the acceleration, the more fuel used. Going slow is likely a better bet.
Plus, even if you get through the next light, the light after that is always red. It never works out in your favor.

05 Ion-3, 5-speed. Combined city hwy, daily commute of 24 miles, plus another ten or so every other day running to soccer practice on country roads.

37mpg.

Highway speeds are 65-70 until I hit the outerbelt then it is down to 50 - 60 in the morning. Country road speeds are posted limits (since I got t-boned on them).

If I stay just on the highway say Columbus to Cleveland, then I get 41mpg. Usually these trips are at 70mph using cruise

Modifications:
K&N airfilter - stock intake
Pulstar plugs - took me from 34 average to 37
synthetic oil - Royal Purple, Castrol, or whatever full synthetic is on sale.
Factory Firestone tires set to sidewall +4 front and back.

Current miles 57K.

today the gas prices went way up again. i decided to check mileage on the highway on my aura xr. 60 to 70 mph it averaged 35.2. i coulnt believe it and then i realized the strong 30 mph winds were behind me the whole way. guess the windf can play a part too. good thing i wasnt going the other way.

Thumbs Up Re: Whats Your Best MPG ???

Hey thanks for the input all ( waa....didn't set any records ....lol )

Couple things I noticed that really help my MPG is SLOW acceleration ,
Shift into neutral for red lights that are still a 1/2 mile out and try to hit them going green ...also using brakes is a direct offset to your fuel economy so less is better ( not saying not to use them for the neighbors DOG ) .....O and yeah the 80 - 100 was driving the 322 to State College twice and down the 522 couple times a day for a weekend ( not brilliant, but I wanted to try it out ) ..I do have a Radar detector..... but no cruise control ...pathetic....

I have kept track of my MPG since day one of my Ion 5 speed manual.

High: 35.9
Low: 24.0
Ave since day one: 28.3

I drive an 80% Highway to 20% City ratio.

I have found I get the best milage when I use higher octane, which I didn't start until 11500 miles. I did 5 fill ups in a row using premium and recorded above 30 mpg each time including the high of 35.9 mpg mark. Since going back to 87 octane I've only reached 30 once and tend to get around 28 which was similar to what I got before trying the premium.

o6 Automatic, and my high was 33.48mpg at the end of December! My running average is 25.83mpg. My low is 22.11mpg, and I think that was before I switched to full synthetic (Amsoil). I have yet to change my transmission fluid to Amsoil as well, I don't know if I should do it soon, or wait till time to change the old fluid.

Before I changed my major, I was going for an Engineer degree, and I had to take an introduction to engineering course at UTA. When I was taking the course we did a lab on cars. In the information given to us at the time, they said that it only takes around 15-20 hp to keep the car going and that most of the horsepower is needed for acceleration. Also they said that wind resistance doesn't factor into most cars efficiency until it gets up to around 50 mph. Don't quote me on these numbers because the sheet I kept the info on is packed away inside a box somewhere...

That being said, of course you want to accelerate as little as possible in order to get the best mileage, which also means using as little brake as possible. I usually let off the gas and coast as far as I can before braking for lights to get better gas mileage of course I have an automatic as well. Also I heard that taking corners 'easier' helps as well.

Mine was about 36 MPG's at an average of about 73 mph. I got this on Shell gas, but no other comes close, and I haven't found anywhere where I currently live that sells Shell gasoline.

My average around the city/highway (if I baby her) is 27-28 mpg's.
