Default Will a 98 MP2 manual transmission work in 97 DOHC SC2?

I'm looking at picking up a 97 SC2 with a blown motor and bad clutch on the cheap. I've been looking for an SC1, mainly because it gets better gas mileage out on the highway, but to be honest if I could have SC2 power and SC1 fuel economy, that would be optimal. Anyway, finding an SC1 is difficult for some reason. Lots of SC2's for sale, though.

Anyway, since the car is a 97 DOHC, my plan would be to get a matching replacement motor, but as long as I've got everything out, I'd like to put in a 98 MP2 transmission to get its miserly .60 5th gear.

I don't care if cruise no longer works.

Will this work or do I need to use a 97 MP2 transmission with the .63 5th gear?

Any other problems I will hit?

thanks

Just drop the transmission in.

Although, there are post that says using MP2 isn't great for gasmilage for a DOHC engine. You might want to do some searching.

I've found a couple people that said they were getting 4-5 mpg better with the MP2 trans hooked to a DOHC, but didn't know if there were any major differences between the 97 and 98-02 version other than the ratio.

Interesting how in 98 with oil at $12 a barrel, Saturn changed the gears to get 1 more mpg, but now with it at $64 a barrel the best Saturn is 5 mpg less than the old ones.

I get better gas mileage just keeping a steady foot on the pedal and anticipating hills and lights, anyway, so the loss of the cruise is no big deal.

I'd e-mail the people who actually did the sway and see what they say. I'm sure they're happy to talk to you.
