Okay, here is what I have done.
I cleaned the throttle body on my 2001 SL1, (I removed the TB) and I noticed a lot of carbon build up on the inside of the intake, so I sprayed the throttle body cleaner into the intake, and I cleaned the PCV Valve then put it all back together. The problem I have now is high idle, whenever I come to a stop, the car will idle @ around 1500rpm for 20 seconds or so, the the idle will drop back to 700-800 rpm. I removed the TB again & cleaned the IAC passage and replaced the IAC. the problem still persists. I have also noticed a slight drop in the car's fuel economy. Also, the EGR valve was replaced about 20,000 miles ago by the dealer. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great 2001 SL1 Automatic w/163,000 miles & counting! Thanks & have a great day! |

Did you replace the TB gasket? There could be a slight vacuum leak. Also, is the vehicle fully warmed up when it does this?

Ok, I have replaced the TB gasket, the PCV valve with one I bought at the dealership, and the IAC with one I got at autozone.
This happens when the car is warm, and when the car is cold. I disconnected the battery while I changed the TB gasket and IAC valve. I have driven 250 miles since I have done these repairs. All of this seems to have changed nothing, so, any ideas of what I'm missing here? Thanks and have a great day! Rick |

I had a similiar issue when I removed and cleaned my TB. After resettting the computer, it took about 300 miles to "re-learn" the correct idle setting.
The other possibility is that you have a bad intake gasket (not TB, but the intake to head). Try spraying carb/brake cleaner around everything and see if you can get the idle to change.

Yeah, I sprayed carb cleaner all around the intake gasket area with no change in idle.
I should clarify, it idles at 1000 rpm in neutral, 800 in gear. and more and more often, it wants to "High Idle" near 2000 rpm, then when you shut the car off and start it up right away, it idles normal. I haven't changed the TPS yet, I will search the forums more intently on Sunday to try to figure this beast out. Rick |

My money is on TPS or the connector going to it. Mine did exactly what yours did after I did exactly what you did. In my case the connector simple didn't make good contact with pins inside the TPS. The tongue inside the connector had lost its spring and the mere act of unplugging it a plugging it back dealt a final blow to old part. Took buying 2 TPSs before I figured that out. Searched far and wide for connector, but found one here.

Well, I have fixed the constantly high idle by adjusting the pintle on the new IAC motor. I have already noticed a significant increase in my fuel economy, wee!!!!!
as for the occasion high idle most everybody on these forums has experienced, I was thinking of replacing the TPS and it's connecting plug, I have to call the dealer for pricing, but it's on my list of things to do, right after I change the tranny fluid/filter this week. Thanks to all! Rick |
