Hey everyone!
I believe today is the day that I succeeded on the thermostat. If anyone believes otherwise by looking at the pictures; please let me know. I couldn't get the extension hose tube to move forward anymore with it bolted down and torqued to 12 ft. lbs. In the beginning galleries you can see the comparison between the 3 thermostats. The original; the "knock off" that will NOT work with a 2001 Saturn L300 3.0L V6. Amazon "matched it" with my vehicle make, model and year (apparently it doesn't always work). The bolts are identical in length; (the original GM ones I ordered and the old strange 13mm bolts I pulled from the 1st thermostat). I used both GM replacement E12 bolts and torqued them to 12 ft. lbs after ratcheting them down equally before switching to a torque wrench. The whole process I banged up the ear fdryer mentioned and cautioned (re-iterated); it is fragile if you are prying down on it with a pry bar. Some tricks are, again the hose maneuvers (pushing down - will bring the extension tube upwards so that you can slide the thermostat in). The difference between the original GM thermostat and the "knock off" amazon one... are two differences that make it incompatible with my car. 1) The height of the [right side] bolt foundation. 2) Not as "skinny" ; in the previous galleries of me installing the "knock off" thermostat; I was able to use a Pry Bar for the hose in front -- popping up the extension tube to slide in the replacement. (This does not work on the GM original replacement) ; you MUST place the thermostat face down first; then press forward on the water tube and the metal bar "the ear" as fdryer called it. Even once it's in; keep pressing as much as possible to ensure a snug fit. *I can't get mine anymore*. I pushed the dip stick backwards and toward the drivers side of the car and "the ear" is all the way forward now. Looks solid! Here are the following galleries.
