Default A/C seems to have a mind of it's own

My A/C has started behaving poorly. When I put it in Auto/Auto and set the temp to something that should cause the A/C to kick on I get only outside air for a while until the A/C decides to turn itself on. I've tried setting every combination of options (Auto/different vents, different fan speeds/vents, different fan speeds/Auto, & Auto/Auto), pushing the A/C button (get the blinking indicator light), switching between fresh and recirculated air, etc. It seems to take anywhere from 5-15 minutes for the A/C to finally come on on it's own. I really hate the logic used in the climate controls in this car and I've never seen/had this problem with this car before.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what would cause this?
