Default DCL power

Hi all, just bought a 96 SL and went to get it inspected. It would not connect to the inspection stations computer or a code reader. I searched the forums and found that some had the same problem and it was either no power to the connector or a problem with the inspection computer. Since I tried 3 different readers and none would connect I believe my problem is power to the connector. Just wanted to check and see if the power problem would affect the sel since it does light up when key is turned on but does go out nornally. If I find that lack of power is the problem can I supply a power source from another wire or does it have to be recieved from the current source? This is our 3rd Saturn and all have been great little cars. Unfortunately as my kids grew they destroyed the other 2. They are all grown and on their own so I hope to keep this fine little car for a while.
Thanks for your help in advance,
Jeff

Welcome to Saturnfans!

Newbie mistake posting in the the L-series forums where you should be posting in the S-series tech forum.

The Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) derives power from one of the interior fuses. Power outlet? Check the console fuses - pull each one out for inspection.

If you have to trace wiring connections, pin 16 (fused) is 12v power, pin 4 is ground for the plug-in readers .

OBDII was mandated in '96, so your '96 S may or may have OBDI or OBDII, depending on when it was made and when Saturn switched the production line over.

Thanks to both of you, it is a 96 obdII, I am sorry about posting in the L series, I thought I was in S and was trying to sign up , sign in, and post real quick cause I was working on it as well as my 92 Chevy pick up. I had to search via my cp to find my original post. The good news was it was a loose wire and while checking pin 16 for power I wiggled it enough to get it back in contact. Thanks for the diagram of the plug as I wasn't sure which was 16 but knew it was one of the corners. Got it inspected today and am a happy camper. Now I am going to hop over to S's and do a little more reading cause I have to do the clutch in it. Again I thank you for your input.
