1996 SL1
Default EGR part number?

What is the correct EGR part number for a 1996 SL1 SOHC? I ask because I just finished my rebuild about 30 miles ago and bought a new EGR. I did so because the old one seemed pretty gunked up and I figured I would get a new one to start fresh with all the other new parts. Well about 15 miles into my new engine it kicked of the SES light with an EGR code and it started idling rough. I pulled the EGR and it looked fine. It is an ACDelco OEM replacement.

I got the old one out, cleaned it as good as I could with carb cleaner, at least the pintle moves now, and hooked it back up. The car immediately started idling smooth and is running fine with no SES light. I figure maybe I have the wrong part from rockauto or maybe it is faulty? The old one seems to be working fine so I am going to attempt to get my money back I guess, but I would like to know if I even have the right part.

Default Re: EGR part number?

Heh-heh, isn't it funny that the new one won't work and the cleaned up old one does? I don't know the OEM number for the egr valve but here's the best thing to remember about egr valves; don't count on a cleaning to see results as much as you were fortunate to have yours work perfectly - making a temporary blocking gasket to block off the two ports underneath the egr valve gives an immediate feedback of whether or not the egr valve is sticking/erratic/stuck/broken. By blocking off the ports, this guarantees no interference of the pintle valve sticking and allowing exhaust into the intake manifold to mess with the air/fuel mixtures. Only blocking off these ports for a before and after trial and error experiment will result in immediate improvement or not. Use the egr valve to hold the temporary gasket in place. Either a soda can or two coins can be used as temporary gaskets.

You might try saturnparts.net or rockauto.com for the OEM number. You aren't the first to post about new part problems.
