I had a very similar problem with my 93 SL2 shortly after buying it. I is difficult to tell if te problem i sthe same as yours as the description is a little vague but this is inexpensive anyway and can be diagnosed. Here it goes:
My problem was a miss that the previous owner cured by changing plugs. however the prolem can back a short while later. My close mechanic friend had the problem solved alomost immediately after my description. Plugs again but with a reason. The plug wires were shot causing the plug on the offending wire to fail. The plugs were changed fixing the symptom not the problem. The bad wire then ruined the new plug shortly there after.
Pull the plugs out and look for very thin black striaght lines on the white part of the plug. Mechanics call it pecker tracking and it gives away bad wires instantly. If this is present change both the plugs and the wires.
This cured my prolblem immediately and it has not returned.
good luck and I hope this can save you some money on the simple diagnosis.
