Swapped out PCV valves. The valve looked great, I just wanted to put the fresh 99 cent one in. Funny thing, both have the exact same code stamped on the side? Added a pint of Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w-20 to the sump. Took a pic. Looks OK?

Performed D/F of the transmission, 13.5k miles since the last one.

Fluid looked great, but the supplies were super cheap and ATF is so much cheaper than R/R the transmission. 148k miles and no issues yet, knock on wood.

($1.58 X 3) + $0.80 = $5.54

Replaced the passenger side tail light bulb as it stopped lighting up when the brake pedal was depressed. Heading to Canadian Tire, I picked up the Sylvania 2057 LL bulbs but accidentally grabbed the amber bulbs instead. Oh well, that'll learn me... it still worked anyhow.

I feel like my Saturn is so boring - nothing ever goes really wrong with it. I guess that's a good thing!!

Once my husband gets back from drill (he's in the National Guard and takes Ursula up to Salem once a month) we're going to do transmission fluid and give her an oil change.

Will likely give her a wash and clean out all my husband's fast food wrappers (because I know he filled the passenger seat with them over the weekend)

This morning, my car's rpm started to act up again. Idling at the stop light, it would go up to 1000rpm on Drive and 1500rpm on Neutral. It was not as bad as a couple of years ago, where it would go past 2000rpm. Solution was easy, a spray down of the throttle with the cleaner. Idle rpms came back to normal, 750 on Drive and 850 on Neutral.

Default an update

i haven't been on in a while but i got janus driving a month or so ago. it really needs an alignment, but it sure is nice to be driving my coupe around! it gets 31mpg or so even with how i drive, and it barely consumes any oil! only about 1/2qt per 1000mi. go go 228k sohc motor! it has a bit of lifter noise when cold, and the compression is laughably low, but it likes to pretend it's brand new.

today i got out the grinder and worked on cutting the parts car's frame up. we got the roof removed and the whole thing cut in half. some more work tomorrow and we should be able to take it to the recycler!

In short:
My saturn got 3 different new EGR valves today...and the problem is still there, minus the rough idle.

long story:
I spent the majority of my day at 3 different autozones with my 97 sl1. First, it was just a P1404 EGR code and rough idle, so after cleaning didn't resolve it, I bought a new one. 3 codes...2 EGR codes, and a P0171 indicating it was running lean. The EGR valve had a tight spot in the open position and was getting stuck. It was still idling rough.

Since the first autozone didn't have another EGR valve in stock, I drove to another one and rented their fuel pressure tester for the P0171. The tester was broken and missing a critical piece. Swapped it for a different one they had and a different piece was broken on that one. I never did get to test my fuel pressure. I swapped the bad EGR valve for the 1 they had in stock. I didn't even finish installing it when one of the mounting "ears" broke clean off. the bolt wasn't even snug yet. I had to throw the original back in, which made the car run rough at idle.

Since the 2nd autozone also only had one EGR valve, I drove to the 3rd one and swapped the EGR valve again. Now, I am back to just the original P1404, but luckily, the p0171 cleared itself. I used my scanner to clear the p1404, but it came back after about 30 miles, so the problem is still there. On a positive note, my rough idle is gone and it runs fine now, except for the SES light being on for p1404.

I'm thinking a good cleaning of the EGR passageway is in order tomorrow. Is there anything else that could be causing it, besides carbon build-up?

Right there. The best way to do this is: Find yourself an old bicycle brake cable, or something similar, cut one end off and fray the cable a little.
Put the other end in the drill and run it in both ports.
Start the engine and watch out! It should blow out any loose carbon buildup. The rev limiter will prevent it from going over 4000RPM. Shut her down, clean her up.
Put your OLD EGR valve back on and see what you get.
If it still idles poorly and/or you get a code, go to the JY and get one.
