Default Replacing heater core hoses ? (1997 SL1)

When replacing the heater core hoses does one have to purchase that big hose assembly or can one simply route a long hose back to the heater core and use some sort of T-Fixture on the resevoir end to make connections to resevoir and the block.

Is the hose assy a dealer item?

Can one get to the hose clips were the core is connected from the top or is it better to get to theses clips from the bottom.

Thanks

Chris
