Default FM Reception Issue

Hello,

It's been alright for the most part but lately the reception for FM is horrible on my 07 XR. At first I would tolerate because it seemed to just be on stations that were too far away, but now it seems to be happening to stations broadcasting from boston which is only 5 miles away.

The problem im having is that when i'm on a station with good reception the station comes in and out and the signal get's stronger (louder) and then drops and the sound get's softer and static(y)

It's really annoying when your listening to a song and you can hear the volume level constantly changing.

I don't have the auto-volume feature on. I've never had a car with this bad of reception for just plain old FM. 6-CD changer works great and sounds fine, as well as AUX input.

I did a search on the forums and saw something about AM but this is FM, I don't know many people who use AM anymore unless it's for talk radio or listening to a game.

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

onefunkar says "common in many 07 auras " but I have never read anything about signal strength issues or any other problems. Is it the 6CD changer system or the standard system that has had troubles?

I was amazed yesterday when I drove to Mexico. I was over 100 miles from my home area and with a mountain in between and I was still getting my favorite station. Most surprising was that I was getting the station both ways. surprising because the antenna is in the rear window glass (dumbest idea any car company hs come up with since they started putting it in the front windshield).

I would look for the connection between the antenna input and the rear window. I believe there is an electronic device/component between the window and the wires going to the defroster power/radio antenna input. That component may have failed if there is no loose connector.

Good luck

I have the same audio system as cfisher2 in my 07 XR, but none of the problems described. I suspect the fix lies more along the lines that Phaeton Driver describes.

Good luck

My 07 XR had the same problem and they reprogrammed my radio and its been fine since. I believe there is a TSB about it.

Man that is just plane nuts. I am not saying it isn't true, but going to the dealer to have a computer in your radio reprogrammed and that clears up a week signal strength issue? Man, that is just plain over the top NUTS.
Now I am a computer nerd that has been working on computer systems since 1970 and I can't imagine programming anything in a radio other than the tuner for your favorite channels. Heck I still ave a radio form an old Ford that has 5 push buttons that were "programed" for the 5 AM radio channels I wanted. It physically moved the capacitors and inductors to get to my station.

I too have had this problem intermittently on my 07 XR. Ocassionally when I first start my vehicle I will only get static or I will just hear my local area station. I am going to have this looked at next time I have my car in, but I did look and there is a service bulletin on this issue and it says to reprogram the radio with the latest service calibration. If that does not cure the problem then it could be the rear window defogger if it happens only when it is in useand there is a bulletin on that too.

It had something to do with the automatic noise reduction circuitry that was squelching the signal so low it sounded like it was drifting off signal. They reprogrammed it and no problems in a year.

You are kidding, right?
I don't want to have to reboot my car 3 times a week just ot get somewhere. Think of all the new virus/worm/spyware that could be written for you car.

I am glad I can build my own cars, no computers, no fuel injection, heck, no radio

I am having the same problem with the FM radio fading/static in my 07 Aura XE. I had the radio calibrated about 7 months ago. It seemed to have helped but did not solve the problem. Almost all of my stations here in Houston have intermittent static or slight fading like it's off the station. It doesn't happen every single minute but enough to irritate me. I plan on taking it back to the dealer again to see if they have come up with anything since the calibration. This is the worst FM reception I have ever had in a car. So far, it is the only feature that I am unhappy with.

I'm a Windows man too but I would rather have UNIX in my car, never crashes..

I have this problem once in awhile at work. XM and AM come in clear but sometimes FM has static. Only while I'm in my work parking lot.

This is not new. Search the Aura forums from Jan 07. Look for posts from Cottage and me. Sounds like the issue is still out there. I'd gotten used to the crappy reception and instead use my iPod through the aux port.

Radio reception is much better with my new Astra. Just wish it had an aux plugin.

I got just a new '08 XR. I am having this problem also on 96.3 FM when I am leaving work (I work at the GM Tech Center in Warren). I see you are from Metro Detroit also. Can you shed some light on where you experience this issue? Also, have you gotten your issue fixed? I have been pouring thru this forum & the only "fix" I have found so far is a reprogram issue with the radio itself. I mentioned this issue when I was at my dealership yesterday & the General Manager has not heard of this problem before. He's going to look into it for me.

I'm with SaturnRaycer on this one. I had my radio looked at based on TSB bulletin #07-08-44-006. They had special technicians come in. Didn't change a thing in my case but it seems to work for some (look for other 'reception' treads here).

They couldn't fix my door/dash trim alignment issue either based on a TSB. Could be that my dealer needs to be serviced !

I use my ipod as well, so much so that I'm looking into getting the PAL installed for it. (I'd just like to see it work in real life first).

Good luck with your reception.

Here's info from an old post ( Ithink from Svenster):
Re: Radio Update Works

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry about bringing up an old thread but I have a service bulletin number that people were asking for but no one had an answer. I had my radio software updated today and the fading is completely gone. Here is what the fix was off of my invoice.

"reprogrammed radio as per document ID #1946394"

Yes, I saw (& already printed out) that post from Svenster. I wanted to check & see if anybody with an '08 XR has had this issue also. Svenster has an '07 XR.
