Default Saturn Body Style

Has anyone ever noticed that, except for maybe the v6 Accord Coupe and the Saturn line up, every passenger car made today has plastic molding along the length of the doors? Any reasons known for why Saturn doesn't do it (except maybe because the whole door is already polymer)? I can't imagine the molding serving any purpose other than looks and I've always liked the clean, uncluttered body panels of Saturns.

I think you just answered your own question. The body moding is there basically to attempt against door dings and you dinging other cars with the metal doors. In the Accord Coupe the plastic door molding is a dealer installed option. It's description says it "Blends in with the vehicle design to protect the Accord against corrosion." The reason why it's not on the Accord coupe and on the Accord sedan is because of looks, clean and uncluttered.

I always liked Saturn's body styles. I think they look very sleek, from coupe to wagon, or a sedan. I also like the wedge look of my first generation SL2. It has 100,000 miles and looks great. I think the polymer body on a steel spaceframe is what really sets the car apart.

I think Saturn is the only car company out there that can take plastic body panels and make them look good on a car.

Remember the original Chevy Lumina APV/Pontiac Trans Sport/Olds Silhouette? Those wedges on wheels looked simply awful. I know I'm going to appreciate the fact that even after harsh Midwest winters, my Saturn will still look good year after year.

Saturn did the plastic right.

Had a 64 Vette and was frequently getting stress cracks taken out of the fiberglass body - about a once a year trip to the body shop as I recall. Hopefully, they have this licked by now.

Recently, my boss borrowed a 92 SL with 150K+ miles. Owner was a pure unadulterated swine, and the interior looked like the car had been used for years as a doghouse. With this kind of appearance care, the plastic panels still made the car look great and worthy of rehabilitation by a loving owner and an engine from Joey.

The gen 1 styling still seems current.

Saturn got the polymer stuff right IMHO.

Anybody else notice that those Geo Storm coupes of yore had an uncanny resemblance in styling to the first generation Saturns? The front end, taillight/decklid treatment, and even the greenhouse profile share similar lines with a casual glance. Just found that a little scary. Hopefully it's just me.

Anyways, back on topic. The upward "swoosh" molded into the side polymer panels on the first generation Saturns acted kinda like side trim. They look like separate pieces, but they're really not. Looked kinda cool. I like the straight crease lines molded into the second generation sedans. However, I personally don't like the curves
they've added to the side of the sedans in 2000. It looks too soft and lacks defining character. Again, that's just my opinion.

Yes, those previous generation GM FWD minivans were more "Dustbuster" than wedge. The wedge cars were the Triumph TR7 and TR8, or as we used to call them, "The Rolling Door Stops." More years back than I care to think about, I came across an accident scene. No one was hurt, but it was close. A Triumph TR7 had gone under the rear bumper of a pick up truck and lifted the rear wheels of the truck off the pavement. The edge of the trunk bumper was about 6" away from the TR7 windscreen. I can only assume that there was damage to the driver's seat in the TR7.
