Question Cracked Rotors already?

re 2001 SL2 18,600 miles.

First time in many cars that this has happened to me -- I brought my car into a local mechanic for an oil change and tire rotations (18,000 miles)

the tech pointed out on the right front brake rotor, what he said were hairline cracks. Said the rotor is unsafe and should be changed.

So -- the original brake pads were still good. Very hard to believe that the rotors would be cracked before even going through a single pair of pads.

The tires had been rotated by a Saturn dealer at 6K miles. The wheels had not been removed other than that time.

So is this mechanic trying to rip me off to the tune of $240 for new rotors and pads (you don't just change one rotor)?

Or is he right and Saturn put out a car with substandard brake parts?

Or is he right, and this sort of thing just happens now and then?

Opinions?

I don't think that I have EVER seen a Saturn brake rotor cracked. If indeed it is then yes he is trying to rip you off because a cracked rotor should be covered under the warrenty. If nothing else as a safety item and I don't think that any store would argue over that. How does he figure that the OEM Saturn brake parts are substandard??? I think that the only way you might get the rotors to hairline crack would be to get them incredibly hot and then suddenly cool them. Hard to do?
Take the car into Saturn and see what they say.

Been with Saturn since 1993, can't recall ever seeing cracked rotors either. Seems unusual.

Regardless of whether or not the rotors are cracked, if he is trying to charge you $240 for new rotors and pads, then he is trying to rip you off in a major way! I recently replaced my front rotors and pads myself for a grand total cost of $65.

At Auto Zone, good quality rotors are $19.00 each, and pads are $18.00 a set.

I think this should be covered under warranty. Ask the service manage and if no results write to Saturn.

Dazed

last time i checked, saturn factory rotors were about $50 each ($100 pair) and the pads were around $70 a set. so you have about $170 or so in parts. add an hour of labor ($65) and sales tax and there's your $240. when you replace the cracked rotor, do both. never do one side only. btw the only time i've seen cracked rotors on a saturn but they were cross drilled rotors that cracked around the holes.

OK Thanks for all your replies

I am suspecting now that they were pulling my chain.

It seems so unlikely that the rotors would be cracked at this point.

They showed me some hairline curves in the surface of the rotor -- this is what they said were the cracks. 3 or 4 on the left rotor, and 1 on the right.

time to get a second opinion.

Thanks again

Ive seen rotors that have a pockmarked surface, and some small cracks from the vehicle being driven infrequently, or always in wet conditions, but the cracks always came out when the rotor was turned. Youre on the right track...go back to your dealer, if they are genuinely cracked, then you deserve to at least have them turned, or a new set of rotors.
