Default Removing Top engine mount without jack

If the junkyard doesnt allow jacks on the yard, how can you remove the top engine mount without jacking up the motor by the oil pan?

Shove a 2x4 between the cradle and the engine. 2x4 might be too thick, might need to be a 1x2.

I've never used anything removing the top mount, just loosen the nuts and let the engine drop down the inch or so. Going back, I pull/pry with a big screwdriver through the top lifting tab/eye.

I believe a block, dimensions 1" X 1" OR 1-1/4" X 1-1/4" will fit between bottom engine-side dogbone mount and cradle, which will hold UP engine as release nuts securing top mount to the timing cover (or mount to framerail nuts).

You may want to take a 2nd person, with a prybar(NOT a crowbar).

Have the second person use the prybar, on the lower dogbone, and as you loosen the nuts to the aluminum bracket-to-head area, it will slowly add weight. Since they already have the prybar between the cradle and the lower mount, they merely just need to apply pressure to prevent the engine from moving. The longer the prybar, the better, because less strength is needed the further you move away from the point of contact with the engine mount.

If I've ever needed a jack while at the junkyard, I'd just check to see if the car I was pulling parts from still had its jack. If not, I'd look in another car.

I miss the good old days when I'd pull a S-Series engine at Pick-N-Pull using nothing but a saw-zall and a few hand tools.

Considering you have to remove the damper pulley and have an automatic transmission to gain the clearance required to pull an engine out the top(manuals can only come out the top while still bolted to the transmission due to the clutch & pressure plate), I would be hard pressed to see anyone pull these engine with less than a cherry picker.

Fully assembled DOHCs weigh around 220lbs. SOHCs aren't much less than that, either.

The pick-n-pulls here have the cars sitting up on stands. It's pretty easy to drop the engines to the ground while still bolted to the cradle and slide them out from under the car.

At home, I use an engine hoist and load leveler.

Ive seen your past posts about making things slightly easier. Im assuming its unbolting the mounts and any sensors needed and cutting off the hoses and whatnot?

Also, how do you drop the engine safely?
The junkyards here have the cars sitting on old rims. I suppose you could put some heavy blanket under the engine before dropping it to avoid damage.

I found a 93 sl1 at the yard with a nice looking mount but besides it being older, i also didnt seem to have a 15mm deep well with me.

By lifting tab, what do you mean? The black piece of steel on the same side that seems to be used for lifting the engine?

I successfully removed the top engine mount out the 1993 SL1 and installed it into my car.

The engine did drop some, i started with the 3 on top first and then took off the 2 others on the bottom. My old mount, i could fit my first knuckle into. With this one, i cant. It seems to have made a difference.

Yep, it seems like it would be great for lifting the engine, so... that's what I use it for! (And consider it to be a "lifting tab")

I just let it fall to the ground and drag it out still attached to the cradle. Or what's left of it after cutting it free of the car.
