1995 SW1
2000 SL1
Default I put a 94 TBI SOHC head on a 98

It was easy.

Most of these resources involve fitting DOHC heads. Too rich for my blood! I had a spare engine from a car I junked that donated the head. Had been sitting for two years so it was hard to find a car to stick it in. Snagged a 98 SW1 that just passed a state inspection and is otherwise nice... body and interior wise. Anyhow...

What came out:

This was actually after a cascade + fresh water rinse

The virgin 94 head's intake ports, without injector notches/ eyebrows/ whatever you call them

The cracked 98 head's eyebrows for reference

MPFI gasket on new head, not yet molested. (I did use a new felpro intake gasket.)

Starting work. Paper towel stuffed in there to catch shavings

Mid-job. Flash froze the die grinder while it was spinning.

what I wound up with. Note, it's not as huge a cut as the stock 98 but I didn't want to cut into any water jackets or other drama in the head, not that I expected to find any. Similarly I wanted a good intake gasket seal, no vacuum leaks etc.

Other notes: The SOHC EGR valve sits entirely on the intake manifold which of course I switched over. No adapters needed. The injectors sit entirely within the manifold so, plausibly, I could have stuffed it on without grinding. I figure they cut the notches so the fuel stream atomizes into a better pattern over a longer period of time mixing with air, and doesn't splash at a 45 degree angle when it hits the razor edge. Simply roundng and smoothing it probably did all of what I needed it to do.

BTW it runs good, idles smooth, revs freely, though I haven't taken it up the road yet.
