Default 2004 VUE transfer case or RDM noise?

I have a 2004 Saturn Vue Redline (V6) with 140,000 miles on the odometer that recently has been making some strange clunking/grinding sounds after about a half hour of normal highway driving.

I notice some roughness/shaking and when I slow it becomes more apparent that something is wrong. The shaking is most noticing when I turn the wheel and do slow circles in a parking lot and lessens when I straighten the wheel. I can sit and let things cool down for about 20 minutes and then when I go to drive again the noise is gone.

This vehicle was poorly maintained by the previous owners so it’s doubtful they changed the RDM or transfer case fluids.

Is there a way to tell what the issue is?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Best advice I can offer is elevate Vue so you can check fluids in TC and RDM and pay particular attention to center bearing between the two AWD driveshaft's.

PM email address if you'd like extracts to check and replace fluids for TC and RDM and to inspect support bearing.

...
I try to visit forum often but suggest you use private messages if in a rush (comes to cell) and include email address for extracts. I seldom check visitor messages so please don't use.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you think my diagnosis makes sense? (RDM or transfer case). Btw it also happens in neutral if I coast after letting things heat up.

I have a couple more questions if you or someone else wouldn’t mind answering.

1. Is the transfer case also the differential for the front axel?

2. What am I looking for at the bearing?

Thanks again!

Transfer case is behind front transaxle and easy to identify because its where front end of prop (drive) shaft connects. See post # 2 of this thread for service info:

See below thread for more thoughts and post #3 has photo of center support bearing with a note to examine the rubber "biscuit" for cracks and torn areas.

Turns out what was causing the issue was a front tire that had 2/32 less wear than the other.

Transfer case is ruined, how can I tell which transfer case I need?

Everywhere I find either the MJ8 or the NVG900 listed as replacements. Not sure how to tell which one I have. How can I be sure?

Here's listing for several Honda transfer cases - fits 04-07 Vue with AWD:
