Default 95 SL2 automatic transmission issues

Hello everyone, haven't been to this forum in awhile and I think this is my first time posting anything.

Anyway, I've had a 95 Saturn SL2 for about 2 years now (my first car) and I love it. Unfortunately it's had transmission issues since the day I got it.

When I put it in reverse it hesitates for a second and then goes, and sometimes (after I've been driving for awhile it seems) it will slam into reverse.

The biggest issue is it will sometimes hesitate to go into gear, and frequently slams into 2nd, 3rd and sometimes 4th gear. This usually happens on warmer days lately (but isn't limited to that). Sometimes while I'm driving, my RPMs will randomly skyrocket. It's been known to go up to 4000RPMs while I'm going 35mph, and even when I'm going 70 it'll suddenly jump from ~2000RPMs to 4500+RPMs.

Sometimes the check engine light will come on and the problem will stay there until i turn my car off, and sometimes it'll thud slightly into gear and the RPMs will drop down, but more often than not I'll have to pull over, turn my car off, and turn it back on again and it's fine. (and the Check Engine light disappears).

My father is a mechanic of 18+ years and he says there's nothing physically wrong with the transmission that he can see from quickly looking at it.

Any ideas of how to fix it / how much it'd cost?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

The last time the transmission fluid and filter were changed was two weeks ago.

It has about 146,000 miles on it. It had 124,000 miles on it when I got it, and since then the problem has gradually gotten more and more frequent.

If you've let it go that long, the reverse slam cure probably won't work. It's worth a try but, it probably won't work. You will probably need to replace the valve body. Several people on here have done it. I'm not one of them. Also it's possible that you'll need to replace the input shaft nut as well. Use the forum jump at the bottom of the page and go to the How-To Forum. Do a search in there. I know there's info about doing the input shaft and I think there's info about the valve body.

There is nothing more frightening than ignorance in action.
