Default 99 Sl2 brake grinding on new pads/rotors

Hey everyone, I LOVE this board-so much helpful info.

So I've got a problem with my brakes. I've got a manual 99 SL2 with about 97k miles. Intermittantly when I brake going fast or slow, I get a nasty grinding noise. I thought it was coming from the passenger front but now I'm not sure.
I replaced the rotors and pads and the noise continued. I checked the rotors again and they are smooth still. I took it to Saturn and they found no problem. The grinding only happens ones in a while. It will start grinding everytime I brake and then go away for a week or two, then start grinding again.
I thought maybe I didn't reattach something correctly but last time I had the wheel off everything seemed nice and tight.
Now I'm starting to suspect the drum brakes. When do they need to be changed? Is there an easy way to check them without having to readjust the parking brake?

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Does it happen just after you've had the car parked for a couple of days or more? If so, that's normal. Look at the rotors through the slots in the rims after not driving the car for a few days. You'll see the rotors are pretty pitted up with rust. That'll make the brakes noisy the first few applications. Those applications eventually knock the rust off, and you're back to shiny rotors. Until the next time you park it for an extended period, that is. The "period" might even be shorter, if, for example, the car is parked on a dirt or gravel driveway and it's especially wet.

Not to make you worry more, here. I hope it's just the rust formation on the rotors.
Do you hear it,ONLY when you brake?? Or does it make when you are turning?? My car started making grinding noise while braking for few weeks and later started making noise while turning, Had to replace wheel bearings. Try taking the wheel off and wiggle the hub to see for extensive ply(usually hard to notice, if it's in intial stage).

Usually they say, when the right side bearing is shot, it will make noise when you turn left and vice-versa. In my case, it was different(cause it was completely shot or something).

thanks for the tips. I didn't hear any gridning for like 2 weeks and then it snowed and now it's grinding again so I bet thats the culprit.

now, how can I check my drum brakes without taking the hub off?
