Default Electric trunk latch swap question

I recently learned that the remote for my alarm system could be wired to remotely pop the trunk. This was never set up though due to the trunk latch being mechanical. I want to get an electric trunk latch, as well as the wiring, from the junkyard to replace my mechanical one to be able to remotely open the trunk. I had a few questions about it though...

What years/body styles can I get a en electric switch from?
Can the mechanical lever next to the seat be connected to the electric latch or would I have to convert that lever to electric too?

Thanks for the help

Every '97 I've owned (5+) with power locks (4+) had a truck pop button on the fob. They were from various build times, some late '96 some early '97 so it wasn't some mid-year change.

Should be the same '97-'99 and I believe only the wagons got a funky one.

Broken wire or broken solenoid coil? I have both in my L300 and rarely use the mechanical trunk release. Easier to press either my remote or button in the car. Using my key only to test it infrequently.

Cars with the mechanical cable (1998 and up) still had an electric release for use with the RKE fob.

1997 and older had the electrical release by the driver side seat. Kinda sucks because my 1997's battery has been dead for years and I have to use the key to open the trunk (I call it a project car but haven't touched it in over 5 years, other than to steal parts from it )

Model changes are in this handy Word document

It sucks at the junkyard too when you find a car with no battery, like they usually are, and it has an electronic trunk latch. Good to know I can keep my mechanical latch though. I think thereís a few 2nd gens at the junkyard RKE, but with it showing tomorrow I have no idea when Iíll get to go.

This is for your '97? That should be an electrical latch at the driver seat (wont' work without battery) unless it has already been swapped.

Good point about the JY - think I ran into that when pulling a tail light lens once.

Itís definitely mechanical. I think it was only an electric switch if you had power locks/RKE already. Iíve never really payed attention to the switch/ latch combo of Saturns at the junkyard before, but thatís how mines set up anyway.

Didn't know there was actually a different latch, I figured one just had the electric release hacked on and the other didn't.

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks. I don't think I've ever looked at a Saturn w/o RKE

Went to the junkyard this morning to grab an electric latch. I thought I would have to grab some wiring for it too but apparently I already have the connector for it. I had always wondered why my mechanical trunk latch had an electrical connector on it. Apparently itís for nothing, lol. I will have to add the wiring from the trunk loom onward though.

When I got my 98 it only had a manual lever release for the trunk latch, even though the key fob had the button to open the trunk... I got an electric latch off a 97 and bolted and plugged it right in, worked great. One of the best bolt-on's I've done to the 'ol girl lol

Could be a Sensor to indicate if the latch is ajar -- both '97&2000Sws had electric release, and a sensor which illuminates IP bulb, when hatch open, or gate latch ajar.

I forgot about that. It's not a feature on SL or SC but it would explain why there is two grounds. I'm guessing that one of the grounds opens with the hatch open, causing the light to go on.
