Neutral Safety Switch / Range Sensor is what i was thinking, if this switch was bad would it prevent my back up lights from coming on?

originally i thought yes, but after watching a few videos i am doubting myself.

thanks,

Michael

Here is the backup light switch for the manual transmission. Not sure if your are manual or automatic. It is located on the transmission as you stated.

Edit: The automatic uses a different part. The Neutral Safety Switch / Range Sensor as you mentioned.

Right! I never look there for some reason. I always look to the left side bar or the signature.

It could be the switch on the transmission, but don't discount the easy stuff first. It could be a fuse, or even a broken wire in the trunk or behind one of the tail lights. It wouldn't hurt to check the bulbs too.

It could be an adjustment issue on the switch as well.

Sometimes if car not driven much the contacts in SW might get dirty.

So can put IgSW in ACC, then move the NSS/range selector forward/back several times (like 25 to be sure).

You can check the switch by 'jumping' the requisite wires/terminals, then see if lights work. If lights NG then, follow the trail.

Delco a little more; WDV a little less$.
.......

Sometimes the sockets fail, more often the bulb-filaments go out.
There is a rear 'ground pack' (left side trunk in '97 & 2000 SW)
but that also grounds the other rear lamps, as brakes.

ok, here is a little up date.

i ordered and changed the neutral safety switch. my reverse lights now have power going to them, one works and the other the wires were pulled from the plug, so i will have to order a new plug and get a new bulb and that side will work as well. i checked for power there and it is present so no issues there.

however my new problem is that i am not getting a code P1816.

quick search tells me that the line pressure is to high or to low. correct me if i am wrong but that is the valve body in the trans, which i have already changed just a few months ago with a rebuilt unit. someone tell me if i am wrong!

thanks, Mike
