Officially it does have to come off. However, if I remember correctly someone posted a procedure oh how to do it without removing the bumper.

Doesnt have to come completly off. But the procedure is pretty easy. When I swapped mine and added fog lamps, I replaced the christmas tree style fasteners on the fender liners with a different style. If I ever have to do it agian, it'll be even easier/faster next time.

I heard that Silverstars burn out to quick and if the name of the game is to not have to remove the front bumper again for a few years perhaps the regular Slyvania bulbs would be best as they have a great light and last longer

OK.
Perhaps you could tell us the procedure.

Or at least a link on the proper way to remove & change headlamps in this car.

i think he was saying not having to turn right around and do it again due to the silverstars burning out so quickly. iirc the silverstars, according to sylvanias website are only rated for 60 hours. since i need to replace the low beams, and they are the DRL, i would be doing it again in a month. to hell with that. ill go with some long life oem replacements. now the fog lights, i would not mind some yellow, true, fog lights as opposed to the white driving lights in there now.
