1997 SW2
Default Quick start cold/ slow start warm 1st try, 2nd try quick start

Hey All,

Got a curious issue with my 97 SW2 163K auto.

When engine is cold, it will start up very quickly. If engine is warm however,

First time I turn the key it cranks for 2, 3, 4 seconds before it will starts.

I usually just let it crank for 3 sec and if it doesn't start by then I then stop, Wait a second, crank again and it fires right up.

Anyone else experience this???

Thanks

REWARD EXCELLENCE!

Did y'all replace the ECTS and connector? Instructions are in the how to library.

My 97 does the same thing. There is the fuel pump check valve issue for this year allowing fuel pressure to bleed off but it hasn't made sense to me why the problem is only when the engine is warm. Like many people here we have gotten used to putting the key to run while putting on the seat belt allowing time for fuel pressure to build before cranking.

Actually, VERY common! Supposedly it's the fuel pump check valve but I'm not yet totally convinced, because like you said it's fine cold (like mine). The common suggestion is to turn the key to run (not start) and wait while you buckle the belt (for instance) before starting but, I've found that makes no difference. Like you, I crank it for just a few seconds, back to run, and then start again and it usually fires right up. When I do that, I usually hear a relay click (between starting attempts) in the passenger JB but haven't removed the cover and felt to see which relay it is (I suspect it's the pump relay though)?
